The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bioproduct manufacturing sector in local and global markets while also providing effective food safety assurance systems.

Role Responsibilities

Do you excel at juggling many responsibilities at once?  Reporting to the Operation and Facilities Manager at the Bio-Industrial Opportunities Section (BIOS), the Senior Processing & Quality Technologist plays a crucial part in advancing Alberta's bio-based processing industry, as directed by the Trade, Investment, and Food Safety Division. If you bring to the table leadership experience, industrial knowledge and scientific knowledge in areas of Cosmetics, Personal Care, Non-prescription Natural Health Products (NNHP), then please consider applying to this position to cover off a maternity leave and get your foot in the door with the Government of Alberta.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Initiate, design and direct product and process development projects relevant to Alberta's value-added research projects.
  • Review finished goods product labels for compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Ensure all Good manufacturing practices forms are completed and signed off.
  • Working alongside engineers and scientists, provide technical expertise in development of projects to assure commercial relevance of results.
  • Effectively communicate and liaise with regulatory bodies, providing necessary information and ensuring compliance with Acts and Regulations enforced by NHP.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards during processing activities.

Qualifications

Two-year technical diploma in a field such as science (chemistry, microbiology or related), plus 7 years of related experience.

Equivalencies:  Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets:

  • Requires knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, product and process engineering, analytical techniques, and scientific research principles.
  • Knowledge of relevant Health Canada regulations, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) and first aid.
  • Knowledge of global trends in cosmetics, personal care and NHP.

Position Information:

  • Office located in Edmonton, AB (Bio Processing Innovation Centre (BPIC), 5520-36 Street NW Edmonton, AB T6B 3P3).
  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week.
  • Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm).
  • Temporary Salaried position covering a maternity leave for 18 months until April 2027.
