The Water and Circular Economy Division is responsible for the overall integration of Environment and Protected Areas’ water and waste policies in Alberta, including regulatory and policy system coordination. The division supports implementation of the department’s legislation and associated regulations and policies, assures that regulatory processes continue to steward and protect water resources, reduces unproductive regulatory burdens, and provides the necessary policy framework for operational and management excellence.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Water Quality and Industrial Wastewater, the Senior Policy Limnologist is the provincial authority on managing aquatic ecosystem health in Alberta (lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands). The position provides leadership, expertise, and policy advice on the management of diverse surface water quality conditions and aquatic ecosystem issues across Alberta.

Responsibilities include but not limited to: 

  • Provide policy leadership in developing and evaluating policies, strategies, management tools, and programs.
  • Evaluate data, information, and research from a variety of sources and communicate findings to the department, GoA and external partners to ensure current and leading-edge information is available to support the development and implementation of integrated policies, planning and program initiatives.
  • Provide scientific leadership in developing and assessing environmental indicators and performance measures, which offer assurance that policy design and implementation strategies support intended outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with diverse stakeholders to enable shared environmental stewardship of provincial water resources and promote a cumulative effects management approach.
  • Enable the transfer of knowledge on surface water quality, aquatic ecosystem health, and water resource management within the department, other GoA ministries and agencies, external partners and the scientific community.
  • Support other initiatives and priorities of the branch, division, department and GoA as needed.

Qualifications

Required: 
•    Ph.D. in a scientific field related to limnology or aquatic ecology.
•    Minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible related work experience.


Equivalencies considered: 

•    Master’s degree in a related field plus 7 years related experience.
•    University graduation in a related field, plus 9 years related experience.


Assets:

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:

  • Familiarity with Alberta’s industrial sectors especially oil sands mining.  
  • Knowledge of reclamation landforms (aquatic) including end pit lakes as well as the reclamation and policy framework.
  • Good understanding of the fundamentals of water quality modelling.

Notes

This is a full-time permanent position Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week in Edmonton.

This role primarily works in an office setting, with field visits required when necessary and attendance at meetings within and outside the Region. Regular and ongoing contact will be maintained with regional staff, departmental specialists, representatives from other ministries and agencies, industry and municipal officials, and the general public.
