Role Responsibilities

As a Policy Advisor in the Strategic Initiatives unit, you will lead research, policy development, stakeholder engagement, and project implementation to shape how Albertans move, connect, and thrive within Alberta’s transportation system.

As a Senior Policy Advisor, you will conduct critical analysis, provide strategic advice, and coordinate cross-government initiatives aligned with provincial priorities focused on the development and implementation of forward-looking transportation policy and engagement strategies. Your work directly informs senior leadership, contributes to high-profile decisions, and influences legislation with far-reaching impacts on safety, mobility, and economic development.

Your key responsibilities include:

 

  • Developing transportation-related strategic policy initiatives.
  • Conducting environmental scans, research, and data analysis to inform decision-making.
  • Preparing high-quality briefing notes, reports, and recommendations for executive leadership.
  • Analyzing trends, policy issues, and program opportunities to optimize initiatives.
  • Coordinating stakeholder engagements with Indigenous communities, municipalities, industry partners, and the public to foster collaboration and information exchange.
  • Coordinating multi-stakeholder projects in collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • Providing expert policy and project management advice to cross-ministry committees, internal teams, and senior decision-makers.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A related university degree (e.g., public administration, social sciences, economics, etc.), supplemented by at least four (4) years of related experience.
  • Equivalencies may be considered. 
  • Experience gathering and analyzing various sources of information and preparing reports with recommendations.
  • Experience achieving buy-in and consensus from diverse stakeholders.
  • Cover letter detailing how your skills and experience align with the role's responsibilities, used to assess writing and communication skills.

 

Assets:

 

  • Previous experience working in a public policy or regulatory environment within government or a similar organization.
  • Experience in policy analysis, stakeholder consultation, and legislative or regulatory development.
  • Experience creating presentations and developing briefing notes, speeches, and background materials for senior leaders.

 

Equivalencies are:

  • A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible related experience; or a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible related experience in lieu of formal education.

Additional Position Details:

 

  • This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm). 
  • Location: Twin Atria Building, 4999 98 Ave, Edmonton, AB T6B 2X3
