Role Responsibilities

The Policy, Governance, and Legislative Services (PGaLS) branch in the Consumer, Registry, and Strategic Services Division of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction is seeking two Senior Policy Analysts for permanent positions in their Strategic Policy Services team.

 

These roles require strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills to lead strategic projects, engage with staff and leadership, and achieve positive outcomes. Successful candidates must be proactive in addressing policy issues, adept at developing work plans, and capable of providing expert analysis to support managerial decisions.

 

As a Senior Policy Analyst, you will be responsible for:

  • Leading strategic policy and legislative projects, ensuring program area, stakeholders, Minister, and government needs are addressed in Cabinet documents, such as Cabinet Reports, PowerPoint presentations, speaking notes and other products as required by Executive Council.
  • Negotiating deliverables under tight timelines with team members and program staff from across the department.
  • Engaging with division staff and senior leadership to achieve positive outcomes and support effective working relationships.
  • Anticipating and identify strategic policy issues and initiatives that may affect the ministry and its stakeholders and proactively address them.
  • Assisting program areas in developing work plans to meet appropriate department and legislative timelines.
  • Providing expert assessment, analysis and interpretation of issues to flag for the supervising manager for action.
  • Facilitation of policy capacity training courses for government employees.

Qualifications

University graduation in any of the following: Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related degree, supplemented by at least four years of related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Related Experience:

  • Working in policy development in any level of government.
  • Working with and providing support to a large number of stakeholders
  • Analyzing and interpreting legislation

 

Equivalencies will be considered: one year of education for one year of experience; or one year of experience for one year of education.

 

The following will be considered assets:

  • Experience working in strategic policy or legislation development.
  • Working knowledge of the process by which legislation is enacted in Alberta.
  • Experience leading and supporting multi-divisional strategic policy projects.
  • Creating reports and other briefing materials meant to provide strategic insights for Cabinet.
  • Working knowledge interpreting and implementing the Policy Cycle.
  • Experience interacting and working with senior leadership, Assistant Deputy Ministers, Deputy Ministers

 

Strong written communications skills are required for this position. A written assessment will be conducted for short-listed candidates.
