Role Responsibilities
We are recruiting for two Senior Investment and Debt Accountant positions within the Investment, Debt and Loan Accounting Group.
Not every accounting role offers this level of technical complexity. The Investment, Debt and Loan Accounting Group handles some of the most specialized accounting in the Alberta Public Service — across $40 billion in investments, $100 billion in debt and a $15 billion loan portfolio. It's detail-oriented work that rewards precision and technical curiosity.
Reporting to the Manager of the Investment and Debt Accounting Group (IDAG), the Senior Investment and Debt Accountant is part of a team of professional accountants responsible for reporting on transactions affecting the Province's investment, debt, derivative and loan portfolios. In this role, you will support the preparation, analysis and review of financial statement information for investment funds amounting to over $40 billion, debt in excess of $100 billion, and a loan portfolio exceeding $15 billion.
.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Preparing and peer-reviewing working papers, journal entries and financial templates for quarter-end and year-end reporting.
- Supporting the preparation of published financial statements for endowment funds and pension plans.
- Reviewing, analyzing and reconciling investment, debt, loan and derivative activity recorded in 1GX and external reporting systems.
- Providing variance analysis, forecasting and accounting support related to investment revenue, debt servicing costs and loan revenue.
- Coordinating with AIMCo, Treasury Operations, Financial Reporting, the Office of the Controller and other ministries to confirm transactions and balances.
- Providing accounting policy guidance and professional support on complex investment, debt, derivative and loan matters.
- Supporting audit requirements by preparing high-quality working paper files and responding to Office of the Auditor General questions.
- Contributing to cross-training and knowledge sharing across the investment, debt and loan portfolios.
To be successful in this role, you will bring strong previous experience in preparing working paper files and financial statement support, along with a breadth of knowledge surrounding different types of investment and debt instruments, including derivatives. Timelines in this role can become very tight, especially around quarter-end and fiscal year-end, so we are looking for someone who can work well under pressure, bring thoughtful analysis and find practical ways to improve how we produce our deliverables.
Our team works closely together and values collaboration, sound judgment, and knowledge sharing. This role offers a strong breadth of experience across investment, debt and loan accounting and reporting in a professional and supportive environment.
