Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Intergovernmental Relations, the Senior Intergovernmental Policy Advisor supports the ministry’s engagement in federal/provincial/territorial (FPT) health policy development and issues management. The role provides strategic policy advice and coordination support to ensure Alberta’s interests are advanced and clearly articulated at national and interjurisdictional tables, and that emerging FPT issues are effectively communicated to senior leadership.

The Senior Policy Advisor coordinates intergovernmental relations activities across the health sector, with a focus on national and international policy dialogue and collaboration. This includes conducting policy analysis and jurisdictional scans, monitoring interprovincial and international developments, and preparing high quality briefing materials, correspondence, and submissions for Ministers’ and Deputy Ministers’ meetings, teleconferences, and reporting commitments. The role supports key FPT and multilateral forums, including Conferences of Health Ministers and Deputy Ministers, and facilitates the coordination of common briefing materials across program areas.

The incumbent provides expert policy advice to inform strategic decision making and support the development of Alberta’s policy positions on intergovernmental health issues. This includes assessing interprovincial initiatives, reports, and proposals to ensure alignment with Government of Alberta priorities; preparing draft positions and recommendations for senior leadership; and collaborating with Executive Council and other ministries on cross cutting and emerging issues as they arise.

The successful candidate demonstrates strong analytical judgment, an understanding of intergovernmental policy dynamics, and the ability to navigate complex political and operational environments. Through proactive monitoring, research, and intelligence gathering, the Senior Intergovernmental Policy Advisor ensures the ministry is well positioned to respond to evolving health policy issues at the federal, provincial, territorial, and international levels.
