Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to attack complexity with your repertoire of diverse tools and skills, honing your abilities to support administration and management of over 60% of Alberta’s land mass?

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior GIS Analyst within the Public Lands Disposition Management program in the Ministry of Forestry and Parks. This position plays a critical role in supporting strategy, land use decisions and regulatory approvals under the Public Lands Act and related legislation by driving insights and answers out of diverse information and data, both spatial and non-spatial. Laws, land, operations, revenue – there is nothing you won’t touch.

The main responsibilities of this position are (but not limited to):

  • Design, maintain, and optimize digital and spatial databases and tools aligned with operational and legislative needs to support land disposition tracking and compliance.
  • Design, build, and maintain integrated data environments, including ETL pipelines, ingestion from legacy and modern systems, and consolidation into centralized databases and internal BI platforms.
  • Develop and maintain custom applications and tools using technologies such as Python, Angular, and Java, supporting full lifecycle delivery from architecture to deployment and sustainment.
  • Configure and manage cloud and hosted environments (e.g., AWS S3 or equivalent), including domain setup, secure data storage, and application hosting.
  • Leverage Microsoft PowerApps and Power Automate to develop custom applications and automate workflows that improve operational efficiency and governance.
  • Utilize modern data platforms (e.g., Microsoft Fabric, data lakes, and BI tools) to enable scalable data integration, analytics, and enterprise reporting.
  • Configure and manage SharePoint-based intranet and web solutions, including development of internal sites, forms, and workflow-driven platforms.
  • Design and deploy reporting solutions and dashboards within internal BI environments, ensuring integration across multiple data sources.
  • Explore and implement AI-enabled solutions to support intelligent automation, data processing, and enhanced decision-making.
  • Operate independently to prioritize, design, and deliver end-to-end technical solutions in a low-support environment.
  • Support planning and delivery of multiple concurrent initiatives, ensuring alignment with business priorities, timelines, and stakeholder expectations.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Completed university graduation in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or a related degree (Computer Applications, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Geospatial) plus a minimum of 4 years related experience.

Equivalencies will be considered.

Assets:

  • A related certification or accreditation (e.g., ESRI or other relevant software certifications).
  • Knowledge of SAS, R, SQL, and project management and/or business analysis principles.
  • Experience coordinating, maintaining, and managing data migration, application license management, and related data integration activities.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills to evaluate, perform, advise on, and ensure the integrity of data analysis, assembly, interpretation, and reporting related to designated industrial property assessment inventories and information.
  • Experience working with industries such as oil and gas, electric power systems/generation, telecommunications, and/or designated industrial property sectors (e.g., machinery and equipment, railway, farmland, buildings, land).
  • Knowledge of property assessment and taxation principles.
  • Knowledge of legislation and regulations related to property assessment and taxation, with particular emphasis on designated industrial properties.

This is a full‑time, permanent opportunity located in Edmonton. The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week).
