Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to attack complexity with your repertoire of diverse tools and skills, honing your abilities to support administration and management of over 60% of Alberta’s land mass?
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior GIS Analyst within the Public Lands Disposition Management program in the Ministry of Forestry and Parks. This position plays a critical role in supporting strategy, land use decisions and regulatory approvals under the Public Lands Act and related legislation by driving insights and answers out of diverse information and data, both spatial and non-spatial. Laws, land, operations, revenue – there is nothing you will not touch.
The main responsibilities of this position are (but not limited to):
- Deliver advanced geospatial analysis to support regulatory approvals under the Public Lands Act and related legislation, ensuring consistent and evidence-based Crown land decisions.
- Design, maintain, and optimize spatial databases and tools aligned with operational and legislative needs to support land disposition tracking and compliance.
- Build and manage ETL workflows, dashboards, and reporting tools that provide real-time insights into program performance and support executive decision-making.
- Respond to urgent and high-profile requests from executives and stakeholders with timely, accurate, and defensible spatial analysis and reports.
- Work closely with internal teams and external ministries to align data standards, support legislative updates, and ensure effective land management solutions.
- Support GIS literacy by mentoring staff, advising on best practices, and developing training materials to build geospatial capacity within the organization.

Qualifications
University graduation in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or a related degree (Computer Applications, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Geospatial) plus minimum 4 years progressively responsible directly related experience.
Other requirements include:
- Demonstrated technical expertise in GIS technology, Esri’s ArcGIS products and FME- Safe Software.
- Experience with Geoprocessing and process automation using Python, (ArcPy), ArcTools and relational database management systems.
- Expertise in spatial data querying and cartographic techniques.
- Experience in handling user account administration, updating content on ArcGIS Portal, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Strong interpersonal skills including effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex spatial data into information that can be understood by peers and clients.
- Experience being accountable packaging and delivering cogent and timely spatial and non-spatial data analyses to management.
Assets:
- A related certification/accreditation (e.g. ESRI, other related software).
- Knowledge of SAS, R, SQL and project management/business analysis.
- Experience in coordination, maintenance and management of data migration, license management of application and related data integration.
- Analytical and technical skills to evaluate, perform, advise and ensure the integrity of data, analysis, assembly, interpretation and reporting of designated industrial property assessment inventory and information.
- Experience with industry such as oil & gas, electric power system/generation, telecommunication and /or Designated Industrial Property fields (machinery/equipment/railway/farm land/building/land etc.).
- Knowledge of property assessment and taxation.
- Knowledge of legislation and regulations surrounding property assessment and taxation with particular emphasis on designated industrial properties.
