Role Responsibilities

In this role you can provide direction in building collaborative relationships and approaches with Albertans, the regulated community, and other stakeholders to share stewardship of Alberta’s environment and natural resources.

 

This is a professional position reporting to the Director of the Forest Operations Section and is a key position in Forestry Division. As the Senior Forester Provincial Compliance and Enforcement, you will be responsible for ensuring that the core business of monitoring timber operations and reforestation activities for compliance is delivered consistently and effectively across the province.


Your Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
•    Developing and implementing a quality management system for the Forest Operations Monitoring Program (FOMP). This will ensure that sustainable forest practices by industry are occurring within legislation and policy, ensuring protection and sustainable management of Alberta’s forests and forested lands is consistent with Forestry and Parks' Business Plan.
•    Providing leadership, direction and guidance to staff involved in the delivery of the Provincial Enforcement Framework through the application of a balanced approach using educational initiatives, prevention, and enforcement.
•    Developing and delivering training and coaching successfully in quality management systems to field and branch Forestry Division staff.
•    Contributing to the success and consistent delivery of the provincial Enforcement Framework.
•    Working closely with Forest area staff, forestry division and other specialists across ministries to ensure the operational program is current, efficient, and effective.
•    Operating within the framework of the Department Business Plan and broad policies of the government and department.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard: 
A university degree in Science, Forestry or Natural Resource Management with plus 6 years related experience. 

 

Equivalency: A related two-year diploma plus 8 years related experience. Additional related education considered in lieu of experience, one year of education for one year of experience. Eligibility for a professional designation as a Registered Professional Forester (RFP).


Additional Requirements: 
•    Valid Alberta class 5 driver license or equivalent.
•    Membership or eligibility for membership with Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals (AAFMP).

Assets: Strong knowledge in auditing principles as applicable to forest management and operations,
•    Understanding of Alberta’s Legislation, (including the Forest Act, Public Lands Act, Timber Management Regulation, Forest Resource Improvement Regulation), policy (including Reforestation Standard of Alberta, Alberta Timber Harvest Planning Operating Ground Rules, and Directives) and procedures pertinent to reforestation and timber operations.
•    Technology literacy with proficiency in all Microsoft Office Program and experience in GIS, and software utilization for database functions/management and customized reporting.
•    Skill in auditing and investigation records and documents pertinent to reforestation and timber harvest, and verification of information in the field.
•    Strong and effective communication, conflict resolution and facilitation skills.
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced multi-issue environment, serving a wide range of varied internal and external interests.

Notes

This is a full-time, permanent opportunity located in Edmonton. This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15AM - 4:30PM, 36.25 hours a week.

 

This position may require final candidates to undergo a security clearance. 

 

Candidates may be asked to complete a written assignment as a part of the interview process.
 

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
