Role Responsibilities

The Reporting Consultant supports evidence-based workforce decisions across the Government of Alberta by turning complex HCM data into clear, reliable insights for leaders. This role combines technical SAP expertise with strong consulting and communication skills to help clients understand workforce trends and take action.

Workforce Reporting & Analytics

  • Consult with ministries and internal partners to clarify business questions and reporting needs.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret HCM data from multiple systems (1GX, Workforce Reporting Platform, SAS/Python, IMAGIS).
  • Design clear reports, dashboards, and visualizations that explain workforce trends and patterns.
  • Prepare briefing materials for senior and executive leadership, including Deputy Ministers and Ministers.
  • Ensure all reports are accurate, consistent, and aligned with data standards and definitions.

Product Development & Enhancement
    

  • Build, update, and maintain customized 1GX queries using SAP Query Manager and SuccessFactors Report Center.
  • Lead or contribute to projects that develop new reporting solutions where no standard products exist.
  • Gather and document business and technical requirements through stakeholder consultation.
  • Translate technical needs into clear documentation, prototypes, and mock-ups.
  • Develop and execute testing plans to ensure solutions meet business and system requirements.
  • Identify data issues and work with functional teams to resolve data quality or system problems.
  • Provide subject matter advice on HCM data, data sharing policies, and data integrity.


Team Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
 

  • Provide guidance to Senior Reporting Specialists on query design and data structures.
  • Maintain documentation for customized reporting solutions.
  • Recommend improvements to business intelligence products, including Power BI dashboards.
  • Participate in user acceptance testing and support alignment between ERP and BI tools.
  • Represent the unit in cross-functional meetings and share information back to the team.

Client Support & Education

  • Promote and support self-service reporting options for clients where appropriate.
  • Develop new self-service solutions when gaps are identified.
  • Provide walkthroughs and training to help clients use dashboards and queries effectively.
  • Present reporting options at client and HR Business Partner meetings.

Qualifications

Requirement:
A University degree or college diploma in Data Analytics, Statistics, Commerce, Computer Science, or a related field plus a minimum of 2 years of experience with data analysis, reporting, and extraction tools (SQL, SAS/Python, SAP Query Manager).

Experience & Technical Skills

  • Strong experience building reports and working with large datasets.
  • Advanced Excel skills for data analysis and presentation.
  • Working knowledge of HR operational processes and HCM data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to explain complex data in a clear, meaningful way for decision-makers.

Assets

  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA query building.
  • Experience integrating multiple data sources into cohesive reports.
  • Familiarity with database design, system architecture, and BI tools such as Power BI.
  • Knowledge of GoA legislation, directives, and policies related to HR data.
  • Experience supporting executive-level briefings or workforce planning initiatives.
  • An understanding of the principal concepts of the project management discipline.  
  • A basic understanding of programming languages (e.g. SAS, Python, R).
