Reclamation and Contaminated Sites Policy Analyst

Role Responsibilities

Join our Reclamation, Remediation and Pesticide policy team as a Reclamation and Contaminated Sites Policy Analyst. This role offers a rare opportunity to gain greater experience in both contaminated sites and reclamation policy, providing exposure to the full lifecycle of environmental liability management in Alberta. The successful candidate will support provincial policy development and implementation in contaminated sites management and reclamation, with opportunities to progressively take on greater responsibility and leadership as their experience grows.

Reporting to the Reclamation, Remediation & Pesticides Manager, the Reclamation and Contaminated Sites Policy Analyst support provincial policy development and implementation related to contaminated sites, reclamation and liability management. Working as part of a highly technical team, the successful candidate will contribute to policy, guidance and requirements that help prevent environmental impacts, manage environmental liabilities and support site closure.

While the position supports contaminated sites, reclamation and liability management initiatives, in the near term the primary focus will be contaminated sites policy, including the development and application of tools, standards and policy approaches that support assessment, management and closure of contaminated sites across Alberta.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and maintenance of provincial reclamation policy that incorporates emerging science, technology and best practices, while building expertise and providing technical support to staff and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will apply effective interpersonal and communication skills to contribute to collaborative policy development initiatives. The ability to build effective relationships across the Department is essential to support the development of briefing materials, technical recommendations and policy advice for departmental leadership.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirement:
Bachelor of Science degree in a related field (Biological, Agricultural, Natural Sciences, Environmental) plus four (4) years of progressively responsible experience OR eight (8) years of combined related education and work experience.

Equivalency:

• Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 years of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year education.

Assets:

• Previous experience in contaminated sites assessment, remediation, or risk assessment.
• Previous policy review and development experience within a regulatory organization.
• Experience applying Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines.
• Experience within environmental consulting, regulatory, or policy environments.
• Experience using the Salinity Subsoil Tool.
• Experience using the Native Prairie Protocol or the Subsoil Petroleum Hydrocarbon Guidelines for Remote Forested Sites in the Green Area
• Reclamation experience across multiple industrial sectors.
• Master of Science Degree in reclamation or contaminated sites.
• Experience doing statistical analysis using tools such as R.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role, with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.

Travel within the area and throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, clients, and other external stakeholders.
