Role Responsibilities

As the Receptionist for the ASO Office (Alberta Specialized Office), you’ll play a vital role in keeping the criminal justice system moving - serving as the first point of contact for the public, justice partners, and legal professionals. This is a dynamic, high‑impact role for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced, public‑facing environment, values professionalism and discretion, and takes pride in providing clear, respectful service, even in challenging situations. If you’re organized, communicative, and motivated by meaningful work that supports fair and effective court processes, this role puts you where it matters most.

 

As the Receptionist, you will play a key role in assisting the administration of criminal justice in Alberta Crown Prosecution Office, ASO. Your responsibilities will include answering telephones; processing mail; photocopying and scanning documents; maintaining office equipment and office supplies; preparing files for court; printing and burning disclosure packages; maintaining the electronic disclosure workspace and performing other services that are required to ensure that Branch goals are met.

 

This position is the first line of contact with accused, police agencies, defence counsel, court personnel, witnesses, victims and the general public who are involved in the criminal justice process. The primary purpose is to answer general inquiries relating to the court process; screen and direct calls, and review and forward legal documents to the appropriate person or
Unit and to providing the best possible service to the Crown Prosecutors, Court Services staff at Provincial Court Criminal, stakeholders and the general public.

 

This is a public facing role and requires strong communication skills and the ability to remain professional when dealing with difficult situations. Candidates must be comfortable handling large quantities of sensitive and confidential information and exposure to potentially disturbing subject matter within prosecution files.

 

The primary responsibilities for the Receptionist include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing reception duties for the Branch
  • Providing administrative and disclosure support for Prosecutors, Legal Assistants, and Paralegals.
  • Problem solving and researching information when required.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma and a minimum of one year of related experience, preferably in a legal secretarial context.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Justice System.
  • Equivalencies will be considered with one year of related education for one year of experience.

 

Assets

  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe
  • Experience with Prosecutor Information System Manager (PRISM) and Justice On-Line Information Network (JOIN).
