Advanced Education supports Albertans by providing the education and training opportunities they need to prepare for the workforce.  This is accomplished by: approving programs of study; funding public post-secondary institutions and other adult learning providers; providing financial aid for learners; and, supporting academic research and innovation.

The Foundational Learning and Skills Development (FLSD) Unit currently oversees two primary programs: the Foundational Learning Assistance (FLA) program and the Community Adult Learning Program (CALP). FLA provides financial assistance to eligible individuals to assist with living costs, tuition, mandatory fees, and books and supplies while accessing approved programs of study, including academic upgrading and English as an Additional Language (EAL). FLSD manages and administers FLA program funding and maintains and refines the policy that all FLA programs must adhere to.
