Role Responsibilities
The Ministry of Forestry and Parks is seeking a Provincial Fisheries Resource Specialist to provide expert advice and leadership in Alberta’s fisheries management. This position is responsible for developing and implementing provincial-level policies and strategic initiatives that operationalize short- and long-term ministerial priorities. The role requires collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure that fisheries allocation decisions are scientifically defensible and aligned with the goals of the Branch.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the formulation of provincial fisheries management policies, regulations, and protocols.
- Review and provide recommendations on policy, legislation, and program changes at provincial and intergovernmental levels.
- Support and provide expert input to fisheries research programs addressing management questions.
- Conduct high-level quantitative analyses to inform policy and operational decisions.
- Standardize provincial fisheries allocation processes through scientifically-defensible policies, protocols, and strategies.
- Maintain and enhance fisheries allocation data tools for internal and external stakeholders.
- Serve as a fisheries science subject matter expert for staff, management, executives, and external stakeholders.
- Prepare technical reports, briefing notes, and responses to Ministerial Action Requests.
- Collaborate with provincial stakeholders to ensure evidence-based fisheries management decisions aligned with Branch objectives.

Qualifications
Required:
- A completed University degree in Natural Resources, Conservation Management, Biology, Fisheries Management, Aquatics Ecology or a related field.
- Minimum 6 years of directly related field experience in fisheries management.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).
Equivalencies may be considered:
- Related 2-year diploma plus 8 years of related experience.
- Additional related education considered in lieu of experience, one year of experience for one year of education.
Assets:
- Experience with Alberta Fisheries Management program, including program goals, standards, guidelines, and policies.
- Experience with operating off-highway vehicles (4X4, ATV, snowmobile), motorized boats (jet and propeller), use of firearms, specialized fisheries equipment including radio/acoustic telemetry, gill nets, trap nets, electro-fishing (backpack and boat), limnological and water sampling, and other fisheries management sampling equipment.
- Experience in designing and conducting field data collections and monitoring programs involving fisheries staff, technicians, or contractors.
- Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal acts, regulations, policies, and procedures. Specifically, Alberta Fishery Regulations, Federal Fisheries Act, Fisheries Ministerial Regulation, General Fisheries Alberta Regulation, Fisheries Alberta Act, Federal Fisheries Act, and Federal Species at Risk Act.

This is a full-time, one-year temporary position located in Edmonton.
Other locations in Alberta may be considered.
Monday – Friday, 7.25 hours per day / 36.25 hours per week.
