The SafeRoads Alberta Branch directly supports the resolution of administrative penalties issued for impaired driving related contraventions of the Traffic Safety Act. The Branch provides Albertans with access to a simple, fast, fair and efficient means of resolving impaired driving disputes. SafeRoads Alberta's mandate is to conclude any review of an administrative penalty within 30 days of its issuance. All reviews are conducted using an independent resolution model and in accordance with relevant legislation and best practices of administrative law.

We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Project and Policy Coordinator to support the seamless execution of critical projects and policies that make a difference. Reporting to the Executive Director of SafeRoads Alberta you will be responsible for policy development and liaising with various stakeholders regarding the legislation that the Administrative Law Programs Division operates within. The emphasis will be on the development, maintenance and monitoring of the legislation and regulations that Administrative Law Programs is responsible for, and SafeRoads Alberta legislation is a large portion of this work.

Duties and responsibilities include but not limited to are:

  • Provide leadership and support of new policy and project initiatives and programs and maintain oversight of policies and directives in accordance with the existing legislation.
  • Prepares reports, recommendations, and briefing materials, and makes presentations to divisional staff, management and/or internal and external stakeholders to provide information and support evidence-based decision making.
  • Leads day-to-day policy issues including obtaining relevant information for the preparation of briefing materials and correspondence with external stakeholders.
  • Provide policy and project implementation support for Administrative Law Programs Division staff, internal stakeholders, and external stakeholders.
  • Conduct ongoing reviews of the legislation Administrative Law Programs Division is responsible for enforcing to ensure it remains responsive, is aligned with government strategic priorities, and facilitates the achievement of program outcomes.
  • Participate in cross-ministry, government and external policy initiatives to ensure Administrative Law Programs needs and interests are represented and stakeholder requirements are considered.
  • Monitor, review and analyze the legislative framework to support ongoing legislative renewal and response to government direction and strategic priorities, and best practices from other jurisdictions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with research methods, project management approaches and information/data management.
  • Knowledge and experience with policy development, program evaluation, legislation development, interpretation and review, including public consultation and implementation.
  • Broad knowledge of the government decision-making processes, objectives, goals and strategies.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with others to achieve timely and quality outputs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and relationship building skills to communicate complex issues in plain language for senior officials.
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize complex information in order to create concise, accurate briefings, reports and/or advice.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills with the ability to lead/coordinate activities of a team to achieve the desired result and participate effectively as a team member.
  • Strong project and resource management skills, with the ability to manage multiple and diverse projects at one time.
  • Ability to understand operational applications and match practical solutions to an overarching conceptual policy framework.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work in an environment with changing priorities, short timelines and limited resources.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field; Public Policy, Social Sciences, Business, Economics, Sociology, Political Science etc., supplemented by 2 years of progressively related experience in policy analysis/development.
  • A cover letter outlining how your experience relates to the qualifications of this role is required.
     

Assets & preferences:  

  • Working knowledge of the Traffic Safety Act and its regulations, and the Provincial Administrative Penalties Act (PAPA) and its regulations.
  • Previous experience in developing and implementing policy, program, and legislation within the Government of Alberta context would be asset.
  • Working experience in project management skills and in stakeholder relations would be an asset.
  • Proven experience in projects involving changes to legislation, regulations, and policies in order to provide strategic direction to branches and to make feasible recommendations to management or leadership.

 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

  • This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.
