The Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health works within Alberta Health, across government ministries, with Alberta Health Services and with other stakeholders to facilitate processes, policies and programs that build healthy communities.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health provides public health expertise to support health surveillance, population health and disease control initiatives on issues of public health importance. This includes:
- Necessary measures to respond to new and emerging pathogens
- Control and intervention programs to limit the spread of communicable diseases
- Infection prevention and control measures
- Health risk assessments
The Chief Medical Officer of Health is the principal spokesperson on public health for the department regarding communicable and non-communicable disease matters.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, utilizing your public health technical expertise and effective leadership skills, this position is responsible for providing support, technical advice and working with diverse groups of stakeholders on various public health issues.
You will research and develop public health policies and policy-related strategies, legislation, standards and guidelines related to the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as strengthen public health capacity in order to respond to issues of public health significance.
This position will be required to provide planning and project leadership on various public health issues and initiatives as well as supervise and support OCMOH policy analyst staff.

Qualifications
Education:
- University graduation in a related field (e.g., Science, Nursing, Health Studies, Public Health, Health Administration, Public Administration, Social Services) and 3 years related experience
Other requirements include:
- Experience with public health legislation and policy research and development in large, complex organization or system
- Diverse stakeholder consultation/engagement experience
- Experience with leading teams as well as leading strategic initiatives
- Good political acumen
- Project management experience, including management/oversight of complex and concurrent projects within specified timelines

Preference will be given to those with:
- A Master’s degree in a related field
Equivalencies– may be considered – directly related education or experience on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
