Within the IPS division, Innovation, Partnerships and Governance (IPG) Branch supports Alberta’s innovators, researchers, businesses, and entrepreneurs by delivering programs and investments that drive economic growth, attract investment, and create jobs. The Branch leads innovation strategies and initiatives aligned with government priorities, including the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy (ATIS), to strengthen research and innovation across Alberta’s key sectors and improve competitiveness.
Innovation Discovery and Collaboration Programs (IDCP) Unit builds Alberta’s innovation capacity by working with post‑secondary institutions, non‑profits, and industry. The Unit helps ensure the province has world‑class talent and modern research and innovation facilities that support growth and attract investment.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Discovery Programming, the Program Coordinator leads the transition toward modernized operations with a strong focus on grants management systems. This position safeguards the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of grant and performance data, ensuring funding processes remain transparent, compliant, and audit‑ready.
This role actively embraces Artificial Intelligence (AI) to strengthen system oversight and helps influence dashboards to showcase the success of Alberta’s innovation system, ensuring all programming and reporting align directly with the goals of the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy (ATIS).
The responsibilities of this role include:
- Lead AI integration and workflow modernization to improve efficiency while upholding strict data governance, privacy, and audit‑readiness standards.
- Ensure program data integrity across the full grant lifecycle, maintaining reliable datasets, enforcing quality controls, and resolving grant management system issues.
- Execute competition processes end‑to‑end, ensuring complete submissions, and efficient reviewer workflows.
- Produce and support validated performance reports and dashboards, transforming complex program data into clear, decision‑ready materials for executives and cross‑ministry reporting.
- Serve as a primary liaison with post-secondary institutions, supporting reporting requirements and ensuring clarity of program expectations.
- Support unit operations through digital workflow optimization, analytics-driven system improvements, and AI‑assisted preparation of briefing materials, correspondence, and action requests.

Qualifications
Requirements:
- 2-year post-secondary diploma in a related field (such as Business or Science) supplemented by at least two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in an Innovation / Research Planning environment, or a grants management environment.
- Experience with advanced Microsoft Office tools, particularly technical Excel (e.g., pivot tables), and data visualization tools to interpret and present complex data.
- Experience with data analysis and insights generation, including using or quickly learning AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to synthesize complex documents.
- Extensive knowledge of grants management tracking systems.
- A cover letter clearly demonstrating relevant skills and competencies tailored to this position.
Equivalencies:
- A related bachelors degree with no related experience; or
- A related one-year certificate and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience; or
- A minimum of four (4) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.
Assets:
- Strong working knowledge of Action Request Tracking System or equivalent.
- Experience with grant funding programs such as Research Capacity Program and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to detect bugs, formula errors, and data integrity issues in complex Excel spreadsheets.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to cultivate strong stakeholder relations, both internal and external, and effectively collaborate on information with department and partner ministries.
- Advanced tact, judgment, negotiation, and troubleshooting skills.
