The Community Initiatives Support (CIS) Unit provides leadership and oversight of Alberta's approach to community-based crime prevention and community safety initiatives, including building and maintaining relationships with community and other stakeholders, and developing and managing approximately $10 million in grant funding to support community-based programs and services that aim to reduce crime and social disorder in the province.

As a Program Advisor, you’ll support innovative programs, grants, partnerships, and strategies that advance community safety and crime prevention. You will work directly with stakeholders, ministry leaders, and cross‑government partners to ensure programs are effective, evidence‑based, and aligned with provincial priorities.

Program & Policy Support

  • Conduct research, environmental scans, and analysis to identify trends, best practices, and strategic considerations for community safety initiatives.
  • Prepare meeting materials, presentations, agendas, and summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support ministry recommendations and contribute to policy, strategy, and framework development.


Grant Program Delivery

  • Support end‑to‑end grant management in line with legislation and ministry processes.
  • Guide applicants, review submissions, identify risks or policy issues, and collaborate to resolve concerns.
  • Review reporting and outcomes, assist in developing evaluation tools, and recommend improvements to data collection and internal processes.
  • Prepare statistical summaries and analysis of grant programs.

Briefings & Correspondence

  • Draft and edit ministerial briefings, presentations, action request responses, and correspondence.
  • Verify information, ensure accuracy, and coordinate across divisions to align messaging.
  • Develop communication materials for leadership, stakeholders, and internal/external websites.

Cross‑Government Coordination

  • Work with partners across Justice, Mental Health and Addiction, Primary and Preventative Health Services, Children and Family Services, Education, and others to understand the broader community safety landscape.
  • Support transformative justice initiatives and participate in cross‑ministry and intergovernmental committees and working groups.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • University graduation in a related field, such as criminology, sociology, public administration, political science, public policy and communications/business.
  • PLUS a minimum of 2 years of progressively related experience
  • Equivalencies will be considered on a one year-for-one year basis

 

 Assets:

  • Experience in the completion of research, statistical analysis and report writing.
  • Understanding of the criminal justice system structure and how it operates and relevant leglislation such as the Criminal Code, Youth Justice Act, Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act.
  • Experience engaging with and writing for internal and external stakeholders or clients.
  • Experience in reviewing and/or developing funding proposals, and/or developing related  recommendations.
  • Experience with project and issues management and/or project management certification/designation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe Pro, Visio.

  • Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week
  • Monday to Friday (8:15 am to 4:30 pm)
  • This position requires you to be in office full-time
