The Ministry of Indigenous Relations serves as a central point for the Government of Alberta to foster and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and organizations. The ministry fulfills Alberta’s legal duty to consult and works in coordination with other ministries, the federal government, and First Nations on land-related claims and collaborative initiatives.
The Indigenous Women’s Initiatives (IWI) division works in partnership with Indigenous people, communities, and organizations to improve the social and economic outcomes of Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people through targeted programs and funding supports. IWI also leads the implementation of the Alberta Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Roadmap, which is a framework that outlines how the province intends to address the systemic causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people. Following the release of the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, the Roadmap is a way to localize the Calls for Justice and set out provincial priorities.

Role Responsibilities
The Policy Coordinator works within the Indigenous Women's Initiatives (IWI) division and reports to the IWI Manager, Council Secretariat and Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP). The role also coordinates programming to support the Partnerships and Grants unit.
The Policy Coordinator supports divisional operations by coordinating cross-unit activities, programs, correspondence, and council/secretariat functions to advance priorities related to reducing violence and improving the safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people. The role also supports program and grant coordination, stakeholder relationships, and internal/external communications, while contributing to planning, reporting, research, and the development of briefing and engagement materials. They also participate in ministry, cross-ministry and intergovernmental initiatives to ensure Indigenous perspectives are considered and integrated, and to communicate division priorities. Advice and recommendations are provided to the Manager and Director to support their participation in strategic initiatives and to help inform policy decisions and future division directories and priorities.
Other responsibilities include:
- Coordinate activities within and across business units to support divisional priorities focused on reducing violence and increasing the safety, well-being, and economic security of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit-plus (2S+) people.
- Support the delivery of the Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP), including the development and implementation of operational policies, procedures, annual work plans, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with AIIP governance activities, program evaluation, performance measurement, and reporting to support effective program oversight and stakeholder engagement.
- Promote the AIIP across Alberta government ministries, post-secondary institutions, Indigenous communities, and community organizations to increase awareness, participation, and partnership opportunities.
- Coordinate communications and operational activities between Secretariats, Councils, and stakeholders, including supporting council recruitment, meeting logistics, reporting requirements, and ongoing governance functions.
- Collaborate with grant managers to monitor and coordinate divisional communications and correspondence throughout the grant lifecycle, ensuring timely processing of grant intake, amendments, reporting, and closure activities.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and stakeholders to support initiatives that address violence, advance reconciliation, and improve social and economic outcomes for Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people.
Role Responsibilities continued
- Provide information, navigation, and pathfinding support to Indigenous communities and organizations by connecting them with relevant government programs, services, funding opportunities, and resources.
- Develop and maintain effective networks with ministry and cross-ministry partners to strengthen collaboration, information sharing, and integrated approaches to Indigenous engagement and community-based initiatives.
- Participate in and contribute to cross-government and interdepartmental working groups focused on addressing violence, advancing the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit-plus People (MMIWG2S+) Calls for Justice, and improving safety and economic security outcomes.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration and establish linkages among programs, initiatives, and stakeholders to enhance service delivery and program effectiveness.
- Develop and deliver presentations, briefing materials, and information sessions to promote awareness of Indigenous Relations initiatives, programs, and strategic priorities.
- Monitor emerging issues, trends, and developments affecting Indigenous communities to inform program planning, policy development, and strategic decision-making.
- Conduct research, environmental scans, and analysis to support evidence-based recommendations, responses to emerging issues, and future program and policy directions.
- Prepare reports, correspondence, briefing notes, presentations, and recommendations for management and senior leadership on strategic initiatives, stakeholder issues, and program outcomes.
- Maintain awareness of government priorities, strategies, and initiatives related to Indigenous engagement, violence prevention, MMIWG2S+ initiatives, and community economic development, ensuring relevant information is shared with internal and external partners.

Qualifications
4 years University graduation in a related field (e.g., Indigenous relations/Native studies, Social Sciences, Women and Gender studies, Political Science or related field) plus two years related experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Required Experience:
• Coordination & Tracking: Build and maintain coordination of programs, projects, correspondence, grants, recommendations, etc.
Assets:
• Indigenous Knowledge: Indigenous histories, cultures, and the government-Indigenous relationship.
• Government Processes: Alberta’s political environment, including decision-making within the Legislative Assembly and other government bodies.
• Gender and Social Issues Expertise: Strategies to address violence and enhance the safety and economic security of Indigenous women, girls, and 2S+ people.
