The Economic Strategy and Investment Division


The division is focused on investment, economic growth and job creation. The division leverages stakeholder intelligence, economic analysis and data to develop strategies and deliver initiatives that support job-creating investment in Alberta.

 

Industry and Defence Strategy Branch


The Industry and Defence Strategy Branch supports Alberta’s economic priorities by advancing industry development, investment opportunities and strategic initiatives. The branch collaborates across government and with external partners to develop coordinated approaches to complex economic and investment issues.

 

Strategic Economic Initiatives Team


The Strategic Economic Initiatives Team supports the development and implementation of economic strategies and high-impact investment initiatives. The team coordinates policy, data and stakeholder perspectives to develop strategic recommendations and align economic priorities across divisions and ministries. The team also supports strategic option development for significant private-sector investment opportunities.

The Policy Analyst supports Alberta’s commitment to remaining a highly competitive destination for domestic and international investment. The position provides strategic analysis, develops options and supports the implementation of complex investment opportunities that may not be addressed through existing government programs, policies or services.

The position operates in a complex environment where issues may have limited precedent or established guidance. Success requires strong research and analytical skills, sound judgment and the ability to work collaboratively across ministries and with external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities may include:

 

  • Conduct economic, policy, jurisdictional and market research to support strategic initiatives and investment opportunities.
  • Review and assess information from a variety of sources, and provide clear, evidence-based recommendations to support decision-making.
  • Support the development, implementation and alignment of strategic economic- and investment-related initiatives that advance government priorities and departmental objectives.
  • Develop options and recommendations for complex or high-impact private-sector investment opportunities.
  • Coordinate policy, economic, data and stakeholder input from across divisions and ministries.
  • Prepare briefing materials, reports, presentations, decision documents and strategic recommendations.
  • Identify emerging economic trends, risks and opportunities that may affect Alberta’s investment competitiveness.
  • Support cross-ministry alignment on economic strategies and investment priorities.
  • Build collaborative relationships with internal partners, economic development organizations, industry representatives and other external stakeholders.
  • Manage working on multiple projects and deliver high-quality materials within changing and sometimes competing timelines.
  • Provide research and analytical support for emerging priorities and special projects.

Qualifications

Required:

 

  • A University graduation in economics, business, commerce, public administration, public policy, political science or another field related to the position, plus a minimum of two years of progressively responsible related experience.

 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 



The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Experience conducting economic, policy, market or jurisdictional research and analysis.
  • Experience developing strategic options, recommendations or decision-support materials.
  • Experience preparing briefing notes, reports, presentations or other materials for decision-makers.
  • Experience working with complex information from multiple sources and identifying key findings and implications.
  • Experience supporting strategic planning, policy development, program development or investment-related initiatives.
  • Experience coordinating input from multiple business areas, organizations or stakeholders.
  • Experience managing projects and competing priorities within established timelines.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • An understanding of economic development, investment attraction or industry development principles.

 

Assets

  • Experience supporting major investment opportunities or economic development initiatives.
  • Experience conducting financial, economic or cost-benefit analysis.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s economy, key industries and investment environment.
  • Experience working on cross-ministry or cross-organizational initiatives.
  • Experience developing options for complex issues where established programs or policies may not apply.
  • Experience working with businesses, industry associations, investors or economic development organizations.
  • Experience using data analysis or visualization tools to communicate findings.
  • Knowledge of government policy development and decision-making processes.
