Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this position is responsible for the day-to-day administration and delivery of the highway maintenance program and completing engineering reviews related to roadway operations. Working within the district, the Operations Engineer assists the Operations Manager by providing the leadership, technical support and expertise required to ensure that the highway maintenance program and other projects are delivered within scope, cost, time, and quality and within a safe work environment. Due to the high traffic volumes on certain roadways and the political sensitivity attributed to this position, the position demands exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. The position also provides recommendations and solutions for issues regarding conflict resolution, problem solving and decision-making.

 

Responsibilities include: 
 

  • Administer the Highway Maintenance Contracts within the prescribed budget.
  • Provide technical analysis for roadway operations, new projects, and programming.
  • Communicate with the public, municipal authorities and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required


Bachelor’s degree in Engineering PLUS 5 year’s related experience in highway maintenance/construction or equivalency as described below.

 

Equivalency
 

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 years of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year education.

 

The successful candidate MUST also have: 
 

  • Solid working knowledge/expertise in engineering, specializing in roadway operations engineering.
  • Working knowledge of highway maintenance, construction and planning.
  • Class 5 driver’s license and ability to provide a clear driver abstract.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a professional member with APEGA.

 

Assets:
 

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Urban transportation experience.
  • Knowledge of contract administration.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient with MS Office applications.
