Role Responsibilities

Are you an Occupational Health and Safety Consultant? Do you have an interest in public service occupational health and safety management? If so, take some time to read through this opportunity. 
 
As an OHS Consultant, you will apply your depth and breadth of knowledge in occupational health and safety in guiding clients on a diverse number of related occupational health and safety (OHS) issues by applying technical methodologies/concepts and principles to your work. As a consultant, you will provide support for various OHS related services and manage day to day OHS related issues for your assigned client groups. Your strong collaborative skills will be required when working closely with client leadership on the resolution of moderately complex health and safety issues.
 
The OHS Consultant is accountable for working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to support business units in managing operational risk and achieving strategic OHS goals. This includes implementing the Government of Alberta’s (GoA) OHS program that helps ministries understand and control hazards, respond to incidents, comply with policies, standards, procedures and legislation, and take proactive measures to improve performance in health and safety and maintain effective health and safety management systems.
 
Reporting to an OHS Team Lead, your key accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

•    Working with clients and stakeholders to facilitate the implementation of the GoA’s OHS Program and to attain compliance with OHS legislation as well as related legislation and applicable standards.
•    Leading or supporting the development of hazard assessments and written practices and procedures.
•    Leading or supporting investigations into Serious or Potentially Serious incidents.
•    Collect and analyze OHS data and crucial metrics, complete reports, and identify trends related to various aspects of the GoA OHS Program.
•    Assisting with the development, review, and implementation of OHS procedures and practices in accordance with legislative requirements.
•    Participating in the development of OHS performance initiatives/measures, interpreting technical results and coaching/influencing staff on how to improve OHS performance.
•    Providing interpretation and application of GoA OHS policies/directives and legislation to staff, management, and executive leadership.
•    Coaching and mentoring all levels of management and employees to provide understanding of their health and safety responsibilities, accountabilities, and assistance in fulfilling their legislated and OHS program assigned roles and obligations.
•    Providing consultation to clients in the completion of workplace inspections, hazard assessments, incident management, WCB reporting and other program elements.

To be successful, you will require in depth knowledge and understanding of OHS Legislation, OHS Program development, OHS program evaluation,  and applicable standards, as well as having familiarity/experience with related program areas such as Psychological Health and Safety, WCB claims management, Duty to Accommodate, Return to Work, occupational health surveillance and so on. 
 
You will support client areas to achieve successful OHS outcomes and goals. Other demonstrated competencies required to be successful in this position include exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate to a diverse client groups, taking initiative, adapting to change, problem solving, time management skills and the ability to multi-task in order to meet business objectives.

Qualifications

Requirements:
•    University graduation in a related field (sciences, human resources, psychology, sociology, business), and a related area supplemented with a minimum of 2 years of directly related experience in OHS program development and implementation. 
•    Knowledge of OHS legislation, program development, implementation and operation. 
•    Superior written and verbal communication skills.
•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•    Proficiency with various Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online).

 

Equivalencies:
•    A related two-year diploma in OHS from a recognized post-secondary institution and four years of related experience, or 
•    A related one-year OHS certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and five years of related experience.

 

Assets:
•    OHS Designation (CRSP, CRST, other related and recognized equivalent).
•    Auditing experience (COR, ISO).
•    Relevant experience and competency, such as incident investigation, inspections, program development or implementation, training.
•    Experience with government or large employers, industrial settings, or high-hazard work environments.
