The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative, and accountable local government to Albertans. Our main responsibilities are:

  • Funding supports for municipalities.
  • A system that strives to ensure appropriate safety standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
  • Protections for new home buyers and required licensing for home builders.
  • Province-wide support for access to public library services for Albertans.
  • Management of about 2.6 million acres of public land in the province's three Special Areas.
  • Independent review and decisions on local matters by the Land and Property Rights Tribunal.

Role Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and update municipal boundary, land, and municipal data records to ensure accuracy and compliance with legislation and standards.
  • Interpret land descriptions, validate geospatial data, and produce maps and other information products.
  • Analyze municipal datasets, identify data quality issues, and support reporting, dashboards, and decision-making tools.
  • Respond to routine information requests and provide data, mapping, and land inventory support to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support municipal land disposition activities through database maintenance and background research.
  • Assist with stakeholder engagement, user support, communications, and documentation related to divisional data systems.
  • Collaborate with senior analysts to improve data processes, systems, and information management practices.

Qualifications

Required:  A University degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geomatics or a related field; plus 2 years of related operational experience, or a two-year technical Diploma in GIS Technology, Geomatics, or Data Management, plus 4 years of related operational experience.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; OR
    1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets

 

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Experience working with geospatial data, GIS applications, or mapping tools.
  • Knowledge of municipal governance, land administration, or local government operations.
  • Experience analyzing, validating, and reporting on complex datasets.
  • Proficiency with databases, spreadsheets, and data visualization tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder service skills.
  • Experience developing reports, dashboards, maps, or other information products.
  • Knowledge of Alberta municipal legislation and administrative boundaries is considered an asset.
