The Office of the Controller is responsible for government accounting policies and financial reporting, financial management and control policies, risk management (financial and audit risk) and financial business process management. The division is a leader in sponsoring, supporting and facilitating initiatives with outcomes focused on effectiveness, efficiency, best practice and continual improvement by the government financial community.

Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a Manager of Financial Accounting and Standards who will play a pivotal role in fostering government accountability through the formulation of accounting and financial policies applicable across government entities. In this role, you will spearhead research and analysis on diverse accounting matters to ensure alignment with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS). Your expertise will be instrumental in providing ministries with sound accounting guidance, promoting consistency in policy interpretation, and collaborating with the Office of the Auditor General on audit-related issues.

Responsibilities also include:
- Providing feedback on statements of principle and exposure drafts from professional accounting bodies.
- Delivering training sessions and presentations on emerging accounting standards to the finance community.
- Supporting the preparation of consolidated financial statements for the Government of Alberta, ensuring accuracy and timeliness by analyzing, interpreting, and reconciling financial data from various sources.

Qualifications

A University degree in Business, Commerce or a related field plus a minimum of four years related experience in accounting and/or Finance as well as an accounting designation (CPA or legacy designations CA, CMA, CGA) is required.

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

In-depth knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards, International Financial Reporting Standards and other accounting standards is preferred.

Knowledge of the Government of Alberta's applicable legislation (e.g., Financial Administration Act, Sustainable Fiscal Planning and Reporting Act, and Government Organizational Act) is preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate a good understanding of public policy objectives, accounting concepts and interpretation of relevant legislation.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications is required.

Note: This posting is for one (1) permanent, full time position. 

Location: The successful candidate will be expected to be able to commute to the Terrace Building in Edmonton, Alberta a minimum of 3 days per week. 

Hours of work: 36.25/week.
