The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous communities, the federal government, industry and other stakeholders to support strong, vibrant Indigenous communities and people who fully participate in a prosperous, competitive and diverse Alberta. The ministry is also responsible for:

  • Promoting social and economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples
  • Co-leading Indigenous training for all Alberta public servants
  • Working with other ministries to develop opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to influence land and resource management decisions.


The Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch is part of the Consultation, Land and Policy (CLP) division in Indigenous Relations. SEPI provides a strong foundation of policy development, strategic engagement, consultation capacity development, expert advice and relationship-building through education, training, and capacity funding. Within SEPI, the Métis Credible Assertion team is responsible for implementing the Government of Alberta’s Métis Credible Assertion Process, which allows Métis organizations (other than Metis Settlements) to be considered for consultation on land and natural resources decisions if they can successfully demonstrate a credible assertion of Métis Aboriginal rights.

Role Responsibilities

In this analyst position, you will collaborate, support, and provide data analysis, report writing, and file administration to the assertion files that are led by a Métis Credible Assertion Advisor. You will provide supplemental review of material submissions, co-drafting correspondence or other documents, help prepare and provide support for meetings, and co-present to the cross-ministry roundtable.

As the ideal candidate, you will have research and analytical skills that will produce evidence-based, comprehensive and reliable results. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, as well as independently, to deliver results and evaluative and critical thinking skills will be required to support effective review and analysis. As well, having a knowledge of current Indigenous issues within an Alberta context, relevant Canadian law and history as it relates to Indigenous peoples and knowledge of Alberta’s Métis Credible Assertion process and criteria will be an asset to provide the support needed in this role.

Qualifications

A University degree in a related field (Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, History, Political Science, Geography, Anthropology, etc.) supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience is required.

Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Required experience includes:

  • Research and analysis skills.
  • Critical thinking and solution-focused problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.


Preference will be given to candidates with some of the following skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous peoples, governance, culture, history, community dynamics and protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of historical and current legislation related to Indigenous peoples and the impacts of this on First Nations and Métis peoples in Alberta and Canada.
  • Established working relationships and/or networks with Indigenous communities and individuals that may include specialized training or lived experience.
  • Strong political acumen
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta’s Credible Assertion Process and Indigenous Consultation policies and guidelines.

Notes

Position information: 

  • 36.25 hours per week, 8:15 – 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
  • This is a Full-time, 12 month temporary opportunity until approximately March 2026.
  • This is a Limited Competition.  In order to be eligible you must be a temporary or permanent salaried employee of the Government of Alberta.  
  • Location: Based in Edmonton.
