Role Responsibilities
The Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration is looking for a strategic leader with investigations and supervisory experience to join Occupational Health and Safety Program Delivery within the Safe, Fair and Healthy Workplaces Division as the Manager of Investigations.
Reporting to the Director of Investigations, the Manager will lead a team of professionals responsible for the investigation of all reportable incidents under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety legislation. This position is responsible for a team of Lead Investigators, Technical Advisors, Investigations resolution staff and an Investigations Assistant, with oversight of all investigations.This includes serious incidents, injuries and fatalities at worksites.
The Investigations Manager liaises with internal and external stakeholders including staff, OHS Compliance, third party subject matter experts and Specialized Prosecutions with the Ministry of Justice where charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act are pursued.
To be successful in this role, the successful candidate must possess the following skills:
- Strong ability to interpret and apply legislation, providing support, advice and quality assurance reviews on complex investigations.
- Expertise regarding a full range of investigative and regulatory enforcement functions including scene and evidence management, taking statements and recommendation for prosecutions.
- Demonstrated supervisory or management experience and excellent change management, coaching and mentorship capability.
- Exceptional relationship-building and communications skills, including excellent listening, writing and organizational skills.

Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standards
- University degree in a related field and four years of recent experience, preferably within a regulatory compliance organization. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience mentoring and coaching individuals is also required.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

- Detailed Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, OHS policies/procedures and best practices.
- Knowledge of challenges and opportunities currently facing Alberta’s workforce in relation to OHS issues.
- Understanding of budget related issues, variance and approval processes related to hosting, hiring, procurement, contracting, exclaim etc.
- Breadth of knowledge of the varied businesses and industries in Alberta.
- Experience in business planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Leadership and management skills and the ability to provide clear direction.
- Knowledge and capacity to build high performance teams and effectively prepare teams to adeptly manage change.
- Budget and contract management skills.
- Strong problem solving skills are required as well as an ability to establish and sustain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
