Role Responsibilities

Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation has an exciting opportunity for a technical leader to join their senior management team!

As the Manager of the Water Projects Management group, you will lead and develop the team of 6 professionals who are primarily responsible for providing technical services to Operations staff of the Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB). These technical services include the management and rehabilitation of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation’s (AGI) water management infrastructure including dams, canals, headworks, weirs, pump stations and drainage works. You will provide a high level of technical leadership and management to a team of hydrotechnical and geotechnical engineers and technologists.

The candidate must have extensive knowledge of the department owned water management infrastructure and have a clear understanding of the operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation requirements of the department water infrastructure. Proven knowledge of Government of Alberta procurement and contracting policies as well as sound project management skills are necessary to be successful in the role.

The successful candidate will apply their effective interpersonal and communication skills to provide inclusive leadership, effectively motivate, engage and develop staff, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders; specifically, relationship with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) to support the partnership that exists between the two departments to implement the design and construction for rehabilitation of AGI’s water infrastructure.

Your ability to foster and build relationships across the department is necessary to deliver strategic advice and recommendations to department leaders and government officials assisting the Government of Alberta in meeting their key mandates, goals, and initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard:

  • Education: University Undergraduate Degree (4 year minimum) in Engineering (Civil, Geotechnical, or Hydrotechnical).
  • Experience: Minimum of  eight (8) years of directly related experience is required.


Preference will be given to candidates who have at least ten (10) years of related experience for this role.

Further Requirements for the Role:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA in Alberta and/or with any other recognized provincial or territorial professional engineering association is required for consideration.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with APEGA will be a requirement of employment.
  • Thorough knowledge and/or experience with water management infrastructure (including dams, canals, headworks, weirs, pump stations and drainage works, etc.) is required as well as a clear understanding of the operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation requirements of the same.
  • Experience in leading a team of professionals and engaging stakeholders is also required.


Assets:

  • A post graduate degree is considered an asset.
