The Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists municipalities in providing well-managed, collaborative, and accountable local government to Albertans. Our main responsibilities are:

  • Funding supports for municipalities
  • A system that strives to ensure appropriate safety standards for the construction and maintenance of buildings and equipment
  • Protections for new home buyers and required licensing for home builders
  • Province-wide support for access to public library services for Albertans
  • Management of about 2.6 million acres of public land in the province's three Special Areas
  • Independent review and decisions on local matters by the Land and Property Rights Tribunal

Role Responsibilities

Policy and Technical Management: Oversee and coordinate policy analysis and technical reviews to enhance safety codes and standards. Provide issues management support, conduct research, and represent Alberta's interests on national and provincial committees.

Legislation and Policy Support: Contribute to the development and review of legislation, regulations, and programs related to safety codes. Lead initiatives to amend policies under the Safety Codes Act and provide guidance on effective implementation.

Team Leadership: Provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team of architects, engineers, technologists, and support staff. Manage resources, conduct performance reviews, support staff development, and ensure operational priorities are met.

Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with municipalities, industry groups, and other safety system partners. Provide technical advice, address concerns, mediate conflicts, and ensure clear communication on safety code policies and decisions.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree; and a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible related experience is required or equivalent as described below.


Equivalency:Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets:

  • Good knowledge of the policy, legislation and application of the safety system and the codes and standards under the Safety Codes Act.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Government of Alberta and ministry legislative and policy decision making process.
  • Good knowledge of how the safety code system functions in Alberta. 
  • Knowledge of governance models, methods of continual improvement, risk management concepts, coaching, leadership and business processes to enhance the quality of service provided delegated administrative organizations. 
  • Combination of post-secondary education and experience. 
  • Sound knowledge and experience to oversee and integrate multiple projects at one time
  • Stakeholder consultation experience and knowledge of different approaches to use to gain stakeholder input.
  • The ability to conduct, independently or through others, research and fact gathering.
  • Strong written and oral skills that demonstrate that demonstrate the ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner.

This position is a Permanent position with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
