The Innovation, Privacy and Stewardship (IPS) Division is accountable for the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy; the protection of personal information and guidance around the ethical use of data; and the governance of Alberta Innovates and the Alberta Enterprise Corporation. The division also advances the strategies and policies related to the delivery of data, content management, technology, and privacy related programs and services. Within the IPS Division, the Privacy, Policy and Governance Branch leads the enhancement and development of enterprise technology, content and privacy management legislation, policy, and strategic initiatives. The branch is also accountable for all department legislation and policy and delivery of privacy services and support for government.
Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Privacy Services, this position leads a team of professional staff in the delivery of privacy services to support Government of Alberta (GoA) departments, agencies, boards and commissions. The position leads, coaches and develops staff, and manages issues and challenges related to service delivery and unit resource allocation.
The Manager works collaboratively with senior leadership by providing timely and strategic advice, establishing best practices, and implementing privacy management tools and processes to support the delivery of services in a way that ensures compliance with the privacy requirements of Alberta's Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) and associated Regulations.
The responsibilities of this role include:
- Leading and supporting a professional privacy team, ensuring strong resource management, clear guidance, and compliant delivery of privacy services under POPA.
- Providing expert advice and oversight on complex or high‑risk privacy matters, escalating appropriately, coordinating with legal counsel, and ensuring timely, defensible resolutions.
- Building a high‑performing and engaged team through coaching, mentorship, performance management, and support for staff development and operational planning.
- Ensuring public bodies maintain compliance with POPA by offering clear direction, training, breach response guidance, and proactive oversight of privacy risks, privacy impact assessments (PIAs), and best‑practice alignment.
- Supporting operational excellence by contributing to business continuity, completing ad hoc initiatives, improving privacy processes, and maintaining accurate documentation and reporting.

Qualifications
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (such as Public Administration, Political Science, Law, Communications or Arts) supplemented by at least four (4) years of progressively responsible experience. Equivalencies will be considered.
- Minimum two (2) years experience managing staff and handling highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- In-depth understanding of the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), associated regulations, publications, and guidelines.
- A cover letter clearly demonstrating relevant skills and competencies tailored to this position
Equivalencies:
- A related master’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience; or
- A related two-year diploma and a minimum of six (6) years of related experience; or
- A related one-year certificate and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience; or
- A minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in lieu of formal education.
Assets:
- Comprehensive knowledge of Alberta’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) Orders, investigation reports, and relevant court decisions relating to privacy.
- Extensive knowledge of government and ministerial processes, policies, and frameworks.
- Familiarity with the operations and functions of program areas within supported public bodies.

Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position
Hours of Work: 7.25 hours daily / 36.25 weekly – Monday to Friday
Location: Remote across Alberta
This position is eligible for remote work. You must reside in Alberta to work remotely.
Interviews will be conducted in person in Edmonton during the week of March 23, 2026.
