Role Responsibilities

The Ministry of Jobs, Economy and Trade is looking for three strategic leaders with regulatory enforcement and supervisory experience to join Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Program Delivery within the Safe, Fair and Healthy Workplaces Division as  Manager of Inspections. 

Reporting to the Director of Inspections, this position manages the delivery of the OHS compliance programs and provides leadership and direction to a staff of Occupational Health and Safety Officers responsible for enforcement of the OHS legislation.  

As a member of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Program Delivery management team, the incumbent provides expert input into the establishment of regional and branch priorities, goals, and program initiatives including the allocation of resources throughout the region.
 
At the work site level, this position plans and implements operational programs and improvements in the compliance program and services for the area, encouraging and coordinating innovative input from OHS staff.  

The Manager is a key position in linking the Mission, Vision and Objectives of the department to the delivery of compliance services.  The position is required to meet branch business plan goals and objectives and provides input into the development and oversees team implementation of program plans.

  • Exceptional relationship-building and communications skills, including: excellent listening, writing and organizational skills.
  •  Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationship and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to deal with clients, the general public, other government agencies and elected, or appointed officials, with a high degree of diplomacy, tact, objectivity, good judgement and professionalism.
  • Has the proven ability to anticipate issues; use problem solving techniques and make timely and reasoned decisions to meet service delivery targets.
  • Ability to deliver presentations to staff, clients and the public.

Qualifications

University degree in a related field plus a minimum of four years of related experience, including progressively responsible assignments concerning co-ordination of programs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience mentoring and coaching individuals is also required. 

Equivalencies:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education


Other Requirements

  • Ability to obtain Peace Officer appointment under the Alberta Peace officer Act


Assets

  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Technical knowledge of safety, health, biological, ergonomic, chemical, and physical hazard identification, assessment and control measures.
  • Project planning and project management experience/certification.
  • Change management experience/certification.

Notes

There are three (3) permanent position available at this time and the hours of work are Monday to Friday – 8:15am - 4:30pm for a total of 36.25 hours.

Working locations are in the following:

•    Calgary (1)- Guinness House, 727 - 7 Avenue S. W., Calgary, AB
•    Edmonton (1)- J. G. O' Donoghue Building, 7000 - 113 Street, Edmonton, AB
•    Lethbridge (1)-Lethbridge Provincial Building, 200-5th Avenue S., Lethbridge, AB

The position requires the successful candidate to be flexible in work time, as this position requires the candidate to participate in on-call/after hour’s rotation (evenings and weekends) which involves rapid mobilization and in field incident response. Incident response may result in exposure to traumatic incident scenes.

The final candidate for this position will undergo an academic check, reference checks and provide a suitable security screening.

Final candidates may be asked to provide a Driver's Abstract. Travel is involved and a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license is required.
