The Alberta Public Trustee (PT) protects and administers the estates of vulnerable Albertans, specifically the estates of minors, people with mental disabilities, and deceased persons’ estates, where there is no one else able to act. Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Public Trustee of Finance, the Manager, Financial Services is responsible for the effective leadership of financial operations in Edmonton and Calgary. This position is result-oriented and focused on providing leadership by developing others, effective problem solving, timely decision-making, and using innovation within financial best practices. This position is also responsible for building effective linkages and alliances within and outside of the OPGT.
 

As a leader of the PT Financial Services Team, this position is accountable for the following duties:

  • Providing leadership and oversight for Calgary and Edmonton teams (18 employees in total) running daily financial operations of all PT client transactions (income, payment, asset/liability, on-location personal property) consisting of approximately 500,000 transactions annually and an annual cash-flow of $300 million. 
  • Ensuring appropriate internal controls are in place to safeguard vulnerable Albertan's money and assets.
  • Resolving transactional and systemic issues with PT Information System (PTIS) and 1GX processing.  In addition to leading the team through implementation of a new financial system replacing PTIS.  
  • Supporting and contributing to the development of the year-end financial statements for review by Office of the Auditor General (OAG), along with co-ordinating the OAG interim and year-end audits.  
  • Guiding staff to develop and implement plans to improve individual and business unit performance.  
  • Ensuring consistent service delivery across both offices in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Limited travel to Calgary office.
  • Leading the conversion of the Public Trustee Information Legacy system finance operations and financial statements to a new MS Dynamics system.

Qualifications

Required:

  • University graduation in a Commerce related field, supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible financial management experience, preferably in a banking environment. Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
  • Supervisory experience in a financial environment.
  • Experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience overseeing compliance to internal control standards.
  • Experience preparing and compiling financial statements of similar scope and complexity.


Assets:

  • Experience with financial audits.
  • Procurement experience writing Requests for Proposal (RFP), RFP evaluations and contract awards. 
  • A completed Accounting Designation. 
  • Possess working knowledge of Trust Administration.

There is one full-time, permanent position available in Edmonton. Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday – Friday
