The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous communities, the federal government, industry and other stakeholders to support strong, vibrant Indigenous communities and people who fully participate in a prosperous, competitive and diverse Alberta. The ministry is also responsible for:

•    Promoting social and economic opportunities for Indigenous Peoples
•    Co-leading Indigenous training for all Alberta public servants
•    Working with other ministries to develop opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to influence land and resource management decisions.

The Strategic Engagement and Policy Innovation (SEPI) branch is part of the Consultation, Land and Policy (CLP) division in Indigenous Relations. SEPI provides a strong foundation of policy development, strategic engagement, consultation capacity development, expert advice and relationship-building through education, training, and capacity funding. Within SEPI, the Métis Credible Assertion team is responsible for implementing the Government of Alberta’s Métis Credible Assertion Process, which allows Métis organizations (other than Metis Settlements) to be considered for consultation on land and natural resources decisions if they can successfully demonstrate a credible assertion of Métis Aboriginal rights.

Role Responsibilities

In this analyst position, you will collaborate, support, and provide data analysis, report writing, and file administration to the assertion files that are led by a Métis Credible Assertion Advisor. You will provide supplemental review of material submissions, co-drafting correspondence or other documents, help prepare and provide support for meetings, and co-present to the cross-ministry roundtable.

As the ideal candidate, you will have research and analytical skills that will produce evidence-based, comprehensive and reliable results. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, as well as independently, to deliver results and evaluative and critical thinking skills will be required to support effective review and analysis. As well, having a knowledge of current Indigenous issues within an Alberta context, relevant Canadian law and history as it relates to Indigenous peoples and knowledge of Alberta’s Métis Credible Assertion process and criteria will be an asset to provide the support needed in this role.

Key Responsibilities

•    Assertion Support:

•    Conduct research on historical, legal, and genealogical documents.
•    Assist in developing evidence packages (e.g., family trees, document summaries).
•    Track and report on meetings, submissions, and file progress.

•    Communication & Reporting:

•    Draft internal and external communications, briefing notes, and monthly reports.
•    Maintain public-facing content and ensure consistent messaging.

•    Legal & Policy Monitoring:

•    Stay informed on relevant case law, judicial reviews, and federal policy changes.
•    Analyze impacts on the assertion process and recommend adaptations.

•    Records Management:

•    Maintain secure, FOIP-compliant records in SharePoint.
•    Support litigation and FOIP requests with accurate documentation.

•    Cross-Ministry Coordination:

•    Act as secretariat for roundtable meetings, ensuring proper records and follow-up.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards: 

A University degree in a related field (Indigenous Studies, Public Policy, History, Political Science, Geography, Anthropology, etc.) supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience is required.

Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

•    1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
•    1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

 

Required experience includes:

•    Strong understanding of Indigenous rights, legislation, and constitutional frameworks.
•    Experience with legal, historical, or genealogical research.
•    Experience working on lengthy projects and managing time effectively.

Preference will be given to candidates with some of the following skills:

•    Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous peoples, governance, culture, history, community dynamics and protocols.
•    Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of historical and current legislation related to Indigenous peoples and the impacts of this on First Nations and Métis peoples in Alberta and Canada.
•    Established working relationships and/or networks with Indigenous communities and individuals that may include specialized training or lived experience.
•    Strong political acumen.
•    Experience using genealogical software (e.g. Family Tree Maker).
•    Experience in records management. 

Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta’s Credible Assertion Process and Indigenous Consultation policies and guidelines. Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.
