The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the ACPS develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.

Role Responsibilities
Are you looking for an opportunity to provide support for the prosecution of criminal and provincial offences using your legal administration skills?
The Edmonton Crown Prosecution Office is seeking a Legal Assistant to support its Low Complexity Trial Courtroom.
Your key responsibilities will include:
• Managing, organizing and maintaining Crown files.
• Preparing and filing legal documentation and a wide variety of other court documentation.
• Liaising with external and internal stakeholders to ensure appropriate handling of criminal files.
• Responding to and following up from enquiries from the public, defense counsel and accused.
• Creating and completing all forms of correspondence.
• Scheduling witness interviews that may involve attending and taking notes for Crown Prosecutors.
• Preparing witnesses for court by explaining the criminal process, answering questions or concerns and resolving issues.
• Liaising with policing agencies to ensure that subpoenas have been served.
• Tracking and maintaining disclosure.
• Utilizing the Justice Online Information Network (JOIN) and Prosecutor Information System Manager (PRISM) to verify charges, court dates, assigned prosecutors, locations and subpoenaed witnesses.
• Assisting other Legal Assistants as required.

Qualifications
Two-year Diploma in a related field such as Legal Assistant, Paralegal or Criminology, plus a minimum of one year of progressively responsible related experience working in a legal administrative role within an office setting.
Equivalencies will be considered:
• 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or
• 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Required
• Experience working with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Assets
• Experience working with Adobe, JOIN, PRISM, Criminal eFile are considered assets.
• Experience in a legal environment specializing in criminal law is preferred.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.

This opportunity is located in Edmonton.
The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week Monday - Friday 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
