Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, the Legal Assistant provides legal and administrative assistance across all PRC functions, including investigations, adjudication, early resolution, and policy development. This role is critical in ensuring that PRC operations are lawful, transparent, and procedurally sound.
 
Key Responsibilities: 

•    Maintaining and organizing legal files, manages timelines and task tracking for ongoing legal matters
•    Supporting scheduling and logistics for meetings. 
•    Providing reliable administrative support and maintaining accurate, complete legal records. 
•    Assisting with the preparation and organization of legal documents, evidence packages, and correspondence related to hearings, investigations, and judicial reviews.
•    Coordinating disclosure processes, including document management, redaction, and records tracking, to ensure compliance with legislative and procedural requirements.

This position plays an essential role in supporting the PRC's commitment to transparent, fair, and effective police oversight in Alberta, as the Legal Assistant role involves assisting with matters that are often complex, sensitive, and without clear precedent. They contribute to the PRC's ability to respond effectively to evolving legal challenges by preparing documentation, conducting research, and coordinating legal processes under the direction of legal counsel.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Two year diploma in Legal assistant, paralegal, office administration, criminal justice or any other related field plus three (3) years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described.

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:

    • one year of experience for one year of education or
    • one year of education for one year of experience.


The following are considered requirements:

•    Experience conducting legal research, drafting legal opinions, and interpreting legislation in a professional setting.
•    Experience preparing comprehensive legal documents, as well as writing clearly and effectively for diverse audiences, including the public, technical experts, and the media.
•    Demonstrated experience balancing legal precision with operational feasibility and reputational sensitivity.

The following are considered assets:

•    Experience applying principles of administrative fairness, judicial review, and disclosure frameworks (such as the Police Act, POPA Act, and McNeil disclosure) in a professional context.
•    Experience working with or in relation to the roles of police services and the Crown, demonstrating a strong understanding of their functions and interactions.

•    There are two (2) permanent, full-time positions available.  
•    Location: Edmonton or Calgary 
•    Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:15 am to 4:30 pm) 
•    Final candidates may be required to undergo an assessment. 
•    This position may require final candidates to undergo security clearance.
