Alberta Law Libraries (ALL) is a province-wide network of law libraries operating within Alberta Justice, Strategy, Support and Integrated Initiatives (SSII) Division. The libraries provide access to legal information resources and legal research services to the legal community (judiciary, crown prosecutors, lawyers, law students and court employees), other libraries and the public.

Role Responsibilities

If so, Alberta Law Libraries has an exciting opportunity for a Law Library Technician – Acquisitions, located in Edmonton.

In this role, you will be responsible for carrying out acquisition-related functions, collection maintenance, surplus procedures, and completing related special projects. 

  • Acquisitions: Working with the Information Resources and Technical Services Manager to place, process, track, verify and receive all new book orders. The monitoring of invoices and accounts through the integrated library system and establishing vendor relationships are all features of this role. 

  • Collection Maintenance: Manage duties relating to the day-to-day maintenance of the collection, and/or for specific locations. Processes, and maintains accurate records for all materials (print or electronic resources) distributed to Alberta Law Libraries users. 

  • Surplus: Working with team members, and identified GOA contacts, to conduct inventories, assist in developing and implementing efficient procedures relating to surplus material handling, and processing identified surplus collection materials in all library locations based on library’s retention policies and procedures. 

  • Other Duties as Required: Creates and maintains additional inventories, prepares reports and undertakes special projects, as requested.

  • Physical ability to handle library materials, including lifting and unpacking boxes of books or moving items between shelves.

Qualifications

Two-year Library Technical Diploma and a minimum of two (2) years of library experience. 

Equivalencies that may be considered: Directly related experience or education considered based on one year of experience for one year of education; or one year of education for one year of experience.

Required:

Assets:

  • Experience with legal publishing industry and book publishers/vendors.
  • Knowledge of library cataloging principles and standards. 
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles.
  • Experience using technology applications including word processing, spreadsheets, video-conference systems, Teams, integrated library systems or other database applications, searching online databases and the Internet.
  • Experience applying library procedures and applicable system-wide plans and policies.


Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
