The Alberta Labour Relations Board is the independent and impartial tribunal responsible for the day to day application and interpretation of Alberta’s labour laws. The Board administers the Labour Relations Code, the Public Service Employee Relations Act, the Police Officers Collective Bargaining Act, and the Public Education Collective Bargaining Act. The Board is also responsible for appeals under Employment Standards and Occupational Health and Safety legislation as well as adjudicating remedies for reprisals under the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act. Role

The Alberta Labour Board offers a unique and challenging opportunity for a labour relations professional with strong investigative, research, analytical and communications skills.

In your role as a Labour Relations Officer, your primary responsibility will be to investigate a variety of applications submitted to the Board. These applications range from determining trade union bargaining rights and unfair labour practice complaints to supervising and conducting votes.

Your research and critical thinking skills are crucial in determining which policies, decisions, collective agreements and legislation apply to each application. Strong analytical and writing skills are essential in gathering and analyzing all background information and preparing comprehensive reports on cases to support the adjudication process. 

In your daily interactions with stakeholders and members of the public, your strong communication and interpersonal skills will assist you in managing high stake conversations. You will use your mediation/facilitation skills and knowledge of issues, behaviours and attitudes influencing each application to engage in settlement discussions to successfully resolve disputes. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work under tight timelines are required to meet the multiple demands of this position. This role involves using online video conferencing (Zoom, WebEx, Teams) extensively. 

Qualifications

Required:

Human Relations Level 2

University graduation in a related field (such as but not limited to: Human Resources, Labour Relations, Business Administration, Law), supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience in labour relations and/or employee relations; or equivalent as described below.

Preference will be given to candidates experienced with labour relations legislation and with knowledge about how it is applied in different sectors.

Assets: 

•    Experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and/or facilitation.
•    Knowledge of labour relations issues, trends and decisions.

Equivalency for Human Relations 2: 

A related two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and four years related experience; or a related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and five years related experience.

Human Relations Level 3

University graduation in a related field (such as but not limited to: Human Resources, Labour Relations, Business Administration, Law), supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in labour relations and/or employee relations; or equivalent as described below.

Preference will be given to candidates experienced with labour relations legislation and with knowledge about how it is applied in different sectors.

Assets: 

•    Experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation and/or facilitation.
•    Knowledge of labour relations issues, trends and decisions.

Salary

Human Relations Level 2

$ 2,524.91 to $3,462.47 bi-weekly ($65,900- $90,370/ year) 

Human Relations Level 3

$ 2,961.77 to $3,914.78 bi-weekly ($77,302- $102,175 / year) 

Notes

Hours of Work:

  • This is a permanent, full-time position working 36.25 hours per week. Hours of work: 8:15AM - 4:30PM, Monday to Friday. 


Travel Requirements: travel within Alberta is required for this role.

  • This position requires the successful candidate to have access to reliable transportation as well as a valid Class 5 driver’s license.


Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
