The Royal Alberta Museum collects, preserves, researches, interprets, and exhibits objects and specimens related to the heritage of Alberta’s people and natural environment. In collaboration with other branches within Heritage Division, the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) Branch is responsible for designing and producing galleries, exhibits, and interpretive features for 18 of the division's museums (including RAM), historic sites and interpretive centres located throughout Alberta. The RAM Branch's Visitor Experience Unit is instrumental in leading this work.

Role Responsibilities

As a Junior Exhibit Technician, you are reporting to the Lead Exhibit Technician and work under the supervision of senior members of a multidisciplinary technical team. You are a key member of a team responsible for fabricating, building, installing, and maintaining exhibits, galleries, and similar public spaces in at the Royal Alberta Museum and our historic sites around the province. In this role, you collaborate with others in several functions related to preparing galleries for new exhibitions, installing and decanting exhibit components of various scales, and maintaining visitor experiences while they are open to the public. Your daily responsibilities are completed within existing guidelines, operating procedures, standards or under direct supervision.

Being a generalist with a certain degree of technical skills in several areas, you are comfortable with fabrication (carpentry, metalwork), installing exhibit components (cases, plinths, objects) according to plans and elevations, and finishing galleries while following design specifications. Working in close collaboration with team members in a multidisciplinary museum environment, you participate in the production, installation and teardown of exhibits and other visitor experience products.

You proactively conduct routine exhibition maintenance, either in gallery or warehouse settings, in a timely and professional manner while following health and safety regulations. As a hands-on technician, you are also capable of diagnosis of various problems and you can identify options for repair and/or replacement. You are an important contributor, supporting the Lead Exhibit Technician with the monitoring of the inventory of materials, supplies, tools and equipment in the production shops and warehouse.

Role Responsibilities Continued

Key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

-    Assist with the production, installation and decant of various exhibition components.
-    Prepare empty galleries and other public spaces by painting walls, re-setting lighting equipment, etc.
-    Assist Exhibit Technicians with the assembly and dismantle of exhibition structures, furniture and various other items. Independently, assemble and dismantle straightforward displays, as per installation
      instructions.
-    Repair and clean exhibitry, structures, showcases, static and modular displays, as instructed/assigned.
-    Complete regular walkthroughs to identify pinch points and faults, and inform relevant stakeholders.
-    Organize and maintain equipment, tools, supplies and parts inventories, while maintaining a clean, safe and organized work environment.
-    Participate in project teams and various committees, as assigned. 
-    Complete other related duties as assigned by the Manager and/or Lead Exhibit Technician.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards (MRS): 

•    Two-year diploma in Applied Museum Studies, Technical Theatre, or other technical fields or a related field plus one year experience in technical services; or equivalent as described below. 
•    For application consideration, you must attach a cover letter explaining your qualification and suitability for this role.

Equivalency: 


•    1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 
•    1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

You will possess the following: 

-    Working knowledge across the functions of the team (carpentry, painting, cleaning and basic repairs) to complete assignments and support Exhibit Technicians. 
-    Working knowledge of museum standards and practices is an asset.
-    Ability to work both independently and in a team environment;
-    Ability to balance numerous projects simultaneously.
-    Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and with other colleagues and stakeholders.
-    Competency with Windows PC platform software programs including Microsoft Office.
-    Self-motivated, strong organizational skills.
-    Working knowledge of safety standards and material handling practices, including those stipulated by Alberta's OH&S requirements and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
-    Ability to operate Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, forklift, pallet jacks, and maintain necessary certifications.
-    Valid class 5 driver's license.
-    Experience loading, unloading, and operating cube vans and 5-ton trucks is an asset.
-    Demonstrated genuine respect of others' expertise and willing to learn from others.
-    Able to lift and handle 25 kg.

Assets:

-    Work experiences related to at least one of the team's functions (such as carpentry, glazing, welding, theatrical lighting or set making), at a museum or art gallery being an asset. 
-    Experience in using and maintaining various hand tools, power tools, and lift equipment.
-    Certification in forklift operation and scissor lifts, plus comfort level in working at heights.
-    Trade certification(s) in relevant field(s) is ideal

This is a temporary full-time position working 36.25 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work is required.

This position is currently based in Edmonton, AB. The position will require some travel within the province of Alberta.
