Alberta Infrastructure is responsible for leading the development of the provincial Capital Plan, which addresses the provincial infrastructure needs of Alberta’s population that support key social programs and services and economic development.
The Ministry designs, builds, manages, and maintains government-owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that school and hospital infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. Infrastructure also provides accommodation services and manages a large portfolio of owned and leased facilities while maintaining fiscal accountability and optimizing value for Albertans.

Role Responsibilities
The intern's main responsibilities will focus on learning on-the-job and assisting the Senior Structural Engineer, who is the Ministerial Authority on Structural Engineering. The mandate of the Senior Structural Engineer position is to develop structural design standards and guidelines, review drawings and specifications prepared by Consultants for GoA projects, provide structural engineering expertise for design of new construction and renovation / modernization of existing facilities, and investigate structural issues in existing facilities and provide recommendations for remediation.
The primary responsibilities for the Structural Engineering Intern include, but are not limited to:
- Receiving training, mentorship, and gaining hands-on experience in structural engineering related to buildings
- Assisting the Senior Structural Engineer in:
o Designing reviews – review of technical reports and contract documents (drawings and specifications)
o Site review and assessments
o Investigation of structural deficiencies in facilities
o Engineering analysis and design
o Research in structural codes and design standards, structural investigation, monitoring, and rehabilitation
o Engineering advisory services
• Assisting the Senior Civil Engineer in reviewing geotechnical reports and provide geotechnical support to project managers
• Professional development and networking
• Working and learning with other Technical Services Branch sections as required
The successful candidate will have:
- Technical competence in structural engineering, and knowledge and familiarity with other engineering disciplines, such as geotechnical
- Superior investigation and problem-solving skillsWell organized, have excellent interpersonal skills and work effectively with others
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with emphasis on client services, teamwork and collaboration
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Qualifications

Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university
- Within 2 years of graduation from an accredited university
- Eligible for registration with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT)
Equivalency: Related experience or education (e.g. related diploma) may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
Assets:
- A Master’s degree in structural engineering is a strong asset
- Knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada, the Alberta Building Code, and the Canadian material standards for design in structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood
- Previous employment experience in structural engineering or geotechnical engineering (field work and materials testing)
- Some working knowledge of AutoCAD software
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
Notes
This position is a Temporary, full-time role (20 months contract) with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
