The Corporate Strategic Services Branch provides strategic leadership, direction, and coordination of a broad range of planning, policy, and administrative services for the department.The Policy and Innovation Unit within Corporate Strategic Services Branch supports intergovernmental collaboration across the department providing advice and coordination. This section also supports the coordination and delivery of the department’s public and stakeholder engagement initiatives as well as education and awareness activities including coordination of the department’s involvement at trade shows and events. The section coordinates cross-government initiatives including intergovernmental meetings and formal agreements.
Role Responsibilities
The Government of Alberta’s Forestry and Parks department is seeking an Intergovernmental Relations Advisor to play a pivotal role in advancing effective intergovernmental and cross-government relationships. As part of the Corporate Strategic Services Branch, this position supports departmental and government-wide priorities by strengthening collaboration, providing analysis and intergovernmental coordination, guidance and advice. Reporting to the Director, Policy and Innovation, the Advisor will serve as a key connector between program areas, other Alberta departments, and external stakeholders to drive awareness, integration, and understanding of intergovernmental issues, topics and initiatives.
Key responsibilities:
- Prepare and draft briefing notes, policy papers, jurisdictional scans, presentations, and briefing binders related to intergovernmental analysis and advice for senior leadership, executives, and the Minister.
- Monitor, interpret and analyze intergovernmental developments across Alberta, Canada, and globally, providing strategic advice, recommendations, and research on emerging policies and issues.
- Support the department and Minister with intergovernmental meetings and events, including Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) forums, municipal events, missions, and trade shows.
- Provide support and expertise to cross-government committees, working groups, and initiatives, representing the department and building/maintaining networks within the department, across the Government of Alberta and with other jurisdictions.
- Coordinate and develop intergovernmental correspondence, departmental submissions, and briefing material related to jurisdictional issues, impacts, and Alberta’s priorities.
- Support the department’s involvement in the Alberta Interdepartmental Committee on Human Rights and support participation in the ratification of human rights instruments and obligations.
- Build and maintain positive stakeholder relations with ministries, governments, municipalities, and external partners to strengthen awareness and understanding of intergovernmental issues.
- Promote intergovernmental awareness across Forestry and Parks by supporting analysis, consultation, and integration of agreements, frameworks, and strategies.
- Support other prioritiy initiatives within the Corporate Strategic Services Branch related to governance, policy analysis and briefing/presentation material development.

Qualifications
Minimum Recruitment Standard
- University graduation in a related field such as business, public administration, intergovernmental or international relations, political science or social sciences plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
- Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Assets:
- Minimum of four years of related experience in government, private sector, or not-for-profit, with exposure to international relations, business, politics, or policy development.
- Outstanding writing and communication skills with the ability to present information clearly, concisely, and accurately and produce high-quality deliverables.
- Superior interpersonal skills, including effective communication across various levels and cultural backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and responsiveness to timelines.
- Strong political acumen and situational awareness, with an understanding of executive and political leadership needs.
- Experience planning and executing events, programs, seminars, or conferences.

This is a full time permanent position in Edmonton, Alberta with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.
