Economic Strategy and Investment (ESI) Division

The ESI Division is focused on ensuring strategies and related policies are developed with a broad economic lens and line of sight to economic growth, job creation and investment attraction through evidence informed decisions.

Economic Strategy and Industry Competitiveness Branch

Economic Policy and Industry Competitiveness branch supports industry growth and competitiveness by developing economic policy, identifying industrial opportunities and working with stakeholders to realize shared goals. This includes working on complex and high-value investments and assessing barriers for growth in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, aerospace and more. Additionally, the branch offers concierge support to stakeholders with complex business needs, assisting in navigating regulatory barriers, accessing resources and attracting job-creating investments to Alberta.

Industry Relations Unit

The Industry Relations Unit leads external relations with industry and industry associations, gathers industry intelligence and provides customized concierge services for complex, high-impact job-creating investments, with the goal of securing positive final investment decisions that directly supports JETI’s mandate of maximizing economic and job creation benefits to the province.

The Industry Relations Unit also provides dedicated concierge support for select, high-impact job-creating investments with the goal of securing positive final investment decisions (FID) while maximizing economic and labour benefits for the province.

Concierge services are:

  • Delivered in partnership with investment attraction agencies, other orders of government and departments.
  • Focused on removing barriers to reaching positive FID for large, transformational investments with complex cross-ministry needs, significant industry implications and/or substantial government program, policy or intergovernmental implications; and
  • Focused on manufacturing, logistics and supply chains, defence and aerospace industries and other sectors with significant economic impacts.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager of Advanced Industries, the Industry Development Officer supports the Advanced Industries team and undertakes research, analysis and project coordination activities to inform strategic decision making by senior leadership and affected stakeholders related to economic policy and strategy development. 


The primary responsibilities of the Industry Development Officer include:

 

  • Respond to department briefing requirements and stakeholder information requests in support of key ministry outcomes related to industry growth, job creation and investment.
  • Research, analysis and preparation of report materials on economic and business climate information to inform industry development.
  • Support Advanced Industries team and unit operations based on sector priorities, such as aviation, aerospace and defence
  • Acquire and disseminate information on findings related to emerging trends, industry policies, issues and programs to team members and others in support of informed planning and decision-making.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field (Business, Engineering, Economics, Arts, Public Administration, Political Science), plus 2 years progressively responsible experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


The position requires the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

 

  • Requires a high degree of creativity, initiative, professionalism, discretion and judgement.
  • Ability to function well in a high performing team-based environment that demands a high level of interpersonal skills and collaborative relationship building.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently and within allocated timelines.
  • High degree of proficiency with MS Office applications and database management.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta economy, key industry sectors and key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Alberta's competitive economic position in the Canadian, North American, and global economies.
  • Experience in working with industrial economic issues is an asset.
  • Knowledge of government programs that support entrepreneurs, job creators, investment attraction and economic development in Alberta, along with knowledge and understanding of other related government ministries, agencies, and crown corporations.

 

 

Assets:

 

  • Experience in related private or public sector in industry development, regional economic development, investment attraction and industry knowledge in aviation, aerospace and defence.
  • Strong communication skills, written and oral.
  • Experience in writing reports and executive briefing materials

Notes

We are currently hiring for one full time permanent position. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (36.25 hours/week).

Work location is in Commerce Place,10155 102 Street, Edmonton.
