Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about fostering reconciliation, advancing Indigenous relations, and contributing to meaningful change within the Government of Alberta? We are looking for a dynamic Indigenous Initiatives Advisor to join our team and lead efforts that strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities, support the implementation of reconciliation strategies, and ensure culturally informed policies and practices across departments.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and promote sustained, respectful and effective working relationships with Indigenous peoples, organizations/communities, partnering ministries, other jurisdictions, and industry stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with Indigenous communities, other levels of government and industry proponents to ensure timely, comprehensive natural resource project approvals.
  • Ensure Branch leadership and departmental decision makers are provided with accurate, comprehensive information regarding influencing factors or issues that may potentially impact resource management planning or project approval decisions.
  • Effectively develop responses to emerging and systemic issues.
  • Supports the development and implementation of Memorandums of Understanding, bilateral, and other agreements for collaborative initiatives and represent Alberta in the implementation of such agreements.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University graduation with a focus on Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Indigenous Studies or related field.
  • Minimum Four (4) years of related experience in Indigenous relations, policy development, or community engagement.
  • A valid Class 5 drivers license is also required.


Equivalency:

Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year education.


Assets:
Sound knowledge, understanding and experience in the following areas:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with more than ten-years of related work experience.
  • Ministry legislation, regulations, policies, mandates, and direction.
  • Indigenous, Stakeholders, Public and community issues in the natural resources sectors.
  • Alberta's policies, guidelines, and procedures for consultation with First Nations and Metis Settlements.
  • Initiatives aimed towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, National Action Plan on MMIWG).
  • Government of Alberta decision-making processes.
  • Indigenous history and culture, protocols, and governance.
  • Constitutional matters, Indigenous case law and Crown treaty obligations, provincially and federally.
  • Strong analytical ability and written skills; with the ability to synthesize information and provide strategic advice and recommendations to the ministry.
  • Strong political acumen.
  • Effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.

This full-time temporary position is based in Edmonton, for up to 8 months.

This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM-4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week.
