Role Responsibilities
Are you ready to play a pivotal role in planning and helping shape Alberta's highway network? As a Highway Planning Engineer, you'll contribute to the growth and development of transportation infrastructure across the province. In this role, you’ll report to the Director of Network and Highway Planning, supporting activities related to highway planning, network data management, and technical advice. You will lead and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making, driving initiatives that impact Alberta’s major transportation policies and projects. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a team focused on delivering innovative, long-term infrastructure solutions for the province.
Your key responsibilities include:
- Leading or participating in network, corridor, and highway planning studies.
- Providing input on technical options and recommendations for transportation issues.
- Collaborating to resolve complex transportation challenges with other teams.
- Leading or participating in the creation and analysis of transportation guidelines and performance measures.
- Reviewing major highway project designs and functional plans.
- Managing highway classifications, city bylaws, and highway designations.
- Advising stakeholders on highway classifications for planning and design.
- Utilizing highway network assumptions for the Alberta Spatial Economic and Travel model.
- Maintaining guidelines and standards for network and corridor planning.
- Supporting decision-making through report preparation and briefing notes.
- Leading investment prioritization for interchanges, safety rest areas, and bypasses.
- Identifying transportation needs for community sustainability and economic growth.
- Facilitating the development of strategic corridors to support Alberta’s economy.

Qualifications
Required:
- A related university degree (e.g., Civil Engineering), supplemented by at least four (4) years of related experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
- Registered or eligible for P.Eng. membership with APEGA.
- Transportation related courses and/or experience.
- Strong data analysis skills.
Preferred:
- Experience with municipal and land use planning.
- Proficiency with ArcGIS, traffic modeling, and trip generation.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Additional Position Details:
- This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
