Treasury Board and Finance, Edmonton – Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA) is responsible for the collection of revenue and the administration of Alberta’s tax, revenue and related benefit programs. The focus of our organization is to ensure a fair, efficient and effective provincial tax and revenue system.

 

Collections and Recoveries within TRA initiates filing compliance work and draws on its substantial expertise to collect tax debt, Alberta student loans, crown debts, and employment standards judgments.

Role Responsibilities

Are you a skilled leader who likes to solve problems, facilitate change, and can motivate and influence people? Do you have excellent communication skills and enjoy working in a collaborative team environment? Do you have technical experience in prioritizing a large collection inventory and implementing complex collection actions? If so, we have an exciting opportunity as a Group Lead in the unit of Filing Compliance and Collections (FCC).

 

TRA runs on collaborative teamwork and has leaders that care about the success of their staff. The FCC group works to ensure fairness in Alberta’s tax administration and equity for both Alberta employees and taxpayers by following up on unpaid wages and outstanding tax returns and payments. The group deals with corporate tax, commodity taxes and levies, and post judgment collections services for Alberta employees. It plays a key role in maximizing tax revenues that help support the province’s infrastructure.

 

As a Group Lead, you will assist the Senior Managers and provide direction and support to the members of your team to facilitate the recovery of overdue corporate and commodity tax debts and returns as well as outstanding claims made through the Employment Standards Code. This position performs a leadership role in the day-to-day planning, operation, reporting and control of the area’s filing compliance and collection activities by establishing and monitoring production targets, ensuring training and development of staff, and managing individual performance on a regular basis.

 

As the Group Lead, you will gather and incorporate input from your group when developing policies and procedures, as well as communicate operational plans, goals, and responsibilities to your group to ensure efficient and responsible enforcement processes. Other responsibilities include providing first level problem resolution, managing process risk, and reviewing and approving enforcement actions recommended by your group.

 

As a proactive supervisor, your professionalism, positive attitude, sound judgment, desire to excel and drive for results, team spirit, strong verbal and written communication skills and building trust-based relationships are essential for your success in this role.

 

Knowledge of Federal and Provincial Corporate and Commodity Tax legislation would be a definite asset. Strong written and verbal communication skills are vital in connecting with external parties, which include other jurisdictions, tax accountants and their representatives.

 

Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

Qualifications

University degree plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience in a collections environment; or equivalent education/experience as described below:

 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of directly related experience; or
  • 1 year directly related experience for 1 year of education.

 

The following would also be considered as assets:

 

  • Experience working in complex program administration.
  • Supervisory experience.

 

Strong communication (written and verbal) and analytical skills are necessary. Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying provincial and federal legislation is essential. Also important are demonstrated skills in collaboration, data analysis, team building, stakeholder relations, and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
