Role Responsibilities

Are you passionate about good governance, public service, and making a meaningful impact in Alberta? Join our dynamic Corporate Planning and Governance Branch as a Governance Analyst, where your work will directly support the strategic direction of public agencies reporting to the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas.

As a Governance Analyst, you will:

  • Support recruitment and appointment processes for the department’s 22 legislated public agencies, ensuring alignment with legislation, policy, and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain tracking systems for agency appointments and reporting.
  • Coordinate agency governance activities, including tracking vacancies, preparing documentation, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure timely and accurate communication with program areas, Public Agency Secretariat, and legal services to ensure effective and efficient completion of recruitments and appointments.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in governance practices and internal workflows.
  • Assist with providing research, analysis, and briefings on governance issues, agency reviews, and compliance matters.
  • Support the coordination and management of projects such as Mandate and Roles Document renewals, Codes of Conduct updates, and agency accountability reporting.
  • Support the development of best practices and tools such as guidelines, workflows, templates, and checklists to strengthen governance frameworks.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A university degree in Public Administration, Political Science or related field.

OR

  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in areas such as governance, working with public agencies, board recruitment, interpreting legislation and policies, coordinating projects, or engaging with stakeholders.


Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

 

Assets:

  • Familiarity with Alberta’s Public Agencies Governance Act (APAGA) and related governance frameworks.
  • Experience working with:
    • Cabinet and Ministerial Order processes.
    • Records management systems and collaborative platforms like SharePoint.
    • Data tracking and reporting tools.
  • Understanding of government decision-making and approval workflows.
  • Experience as a volunteer or serving as a board member or staff member working with a board of an organization.
  • Ability to work effectively in environments where priorities can shift quickly and where discretion is essential.

This position work Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM-4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week.
