Alberta Infrastructure designs, builds, manages and maintains government-owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that schools, hospitals and government facilities infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. Role Responsibilities
Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Gardener will perform all job responsibilities with minimal supervision. Thus, the position requires initiative and proactive approach to maintenance requirements.
Responsibilities:
The main responsibilities of this position are (but not limited to):
- Plan, creates and maintains the attractive appearance of Government Centre rounds for clients and visitors, utilizing accepted Horticultural industry standards and innovative ideas, carried out within budget, and pre-set operational times frames and constraints.
- Provide clients and visitors with safe year-round site access, utilizing scheduled maintenance activities, proactive trouble shooting, quick response times and task appropriate procedures, products, and equipment.
- The incumbent will be responsible for snow and ice removal and sanding of slippery surfaces, maintain overhead tree canopy in safe condition.
- Provides manpower assistance, under Department policy and guidelines, to various Ministries and organizations in the public launching of program initiatives and the staging of special events.
- Experience, design, and layout skills are required to select plant varieties and create new flower bed designs each year. Decisions must factor in a variety of changing site conditions and planting dates.
- Provides an integrated pest management program (IPM) for greenhouse implementation, utilizing a combination of biological controls, pesticides and visual inspection and recognition.
- Evaluate nutrient requirements of greenhouse crops and develops custom feeding programs based on visual observations of growth, color, and vigor of crops and prevailing growing conditions.
- Carries out all maintenance functions in a safe manner, as outlines in OH&S regulations. Duties are completed in all weather conditions (extreme temperature, heating, noise).

Minimum Qualifications: Some high school’s education supplemented by related courses (diploma in Horticulture or botany) plus two years related courses plus two years related experience; or equivalent as described below.
Directly related education or experience considered based on:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience.
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Special Requirement: Physically able to perform horticultural work like lifting up to 50 lbs. weight, extensive kneeling, bending, sitting and reaching for extended time.
Assets:
- Horticulture or landscape maintenance hands on work experience.
- Greenhouse Pesticides License
- Basic supervisory skills
- Communication skills
- WHIMS Training
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license to operate vehicles
Notes
This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 40 hrs. Monday to Friday (7:00 am – 3:30 pm).
Incumbent will be on an “on call list” for afterhours issues, annual watering schedule and may be assigned responsibilities during seasonal closure. There can be lot of over time in the work schedule.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
