Salary: $33.69 to $44.13 per hour plus 11.2% in lieu of holidays and vacation

Role Responsibilities

Note: This recruitment will be conducted to fill two (2) temporary wage position's ending on or before March 31, 2027 with a possibility of extension. 

 

The GIS Technologist provides geographic, cartographic and thematic mapping support for Alberta electoral strategic, operational, and research purposes. This position works within the confines of the Election Act and associated regulations, directives and business rules to assist in electoral spatial data management, including creation, modification and analysis using GIS tools and spatial expertise.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Post-Secondary education in a GIS or related program with 2 years experience working directly with spatial datasets. 

    Equivalencies may be considered as follows:

    • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 

  • Knowledge of best practices for spatial data management, cartographic design, Database Design, and GIS modelling and analysis.
  • Two or more years experience using the ESRI suite of products.
  • Experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, WebApp Builder and Dashboard, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Portal, Python Scripting, and FME would be considered assets.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Develop/produce GIS programs and multiple scripting languages.
  • Decipher and troubleshoot existing GIS programs and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Analytical skills to diagnose problems and coordinate/effect resolution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to produce consistent data.
  • Ability to edit maps and text with diligent attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Flexibility to multitask, change direction and priorities when directed to work on multiple projects, sometimes under tight time constraints.

 

Software

  • Experience with ESRI, and ESRI’s WebApp Builder and Dashboard.
  • Experience with Google geospatial systems – Google Earth (KML/KMZ)
  • Programming/Scripting – Python, SQL, JavaScript, Visual Basic, HTML, CSS, XML, Arcade
  • Non spatial data management - MS Access, Excel, 7-Zip, MS SQL Server, Visual Studios, Oracle or other relational database management systems
  • Publishing – HP plotter systems, Adobe Acrobat
  • Communication - MS Office Suite of programs

This position is exempt from the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). Final Candidates will be required to undergo a Police Information Check.
