Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) is the Government of Alberta’s full-service communications, public relations and marketing agency.CPE provides planning, execution and measurement of communications efforts. Its expert staff provide specialized services across the spectrum of communications and marketing from research, design, writing and social media, to event coordination, issues management, digital communications, advertising and public engagement.The agency staffs the external communications functions in all departments of government and its operations branch, with a mandate of enhancing communications between the people and the Government of Alberta.

Role Responsibilities

If you're smiling and nodding, this Front-End Designer role might just be the perfect match for you!

As the Front-End Designer, reporting to the Assistant Director of the Research, Analysis, and Digital Experience team, you’ll play a key role in designing and prototyping clean, responsive, and user-centered digital products for Alberta.ca. You will take ideas from concept to high-fidelity Figma designs, then build static HTML prototypes that will be implemented by our front-end developers in Drupal. Your work will ensure that Alberta.ca meets Government of Alberta (GoA) standards, follows best practices in accessibility (WCAG 2.1, AA), and delivers an outstanding user experience across devices.

You'll collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders across the Government of Alberta to translate ideas into polished, functional designs. Your role will help shape the future of GoA’s web design and promote a more user-centered approach.

Your duties will include: 

 

  • Collaborating on and championing ongoing improvements to the Alberta.ca environment.
  • Bringing ideas from the concept stage to finalized Figma designs for new Alberta.ca web components and marketing microsites.
  • Building responsive HTML functional prototypes.
  • Documenting functional requirements and working closely with front end developers who implement changes to the Alberta.ca Drupal web content management system.
  • Ensuring Alberta.ca is accessible for all Albertans, including those who use assistive technologies by implementing WCAG 2.1 compliant front-end design and development.
  • Performing testing and quality assurance activities to ensure your designs are implemented accurately and are WCAG 2.1 compliant.
  • Ensuring alberta.ca continues to be a trusted source of information by upholding & maintaining standards.
  • Developing and maintaining effective and productive relationships with a wide variety of both internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistency, quality and accessibility across the Government of Alberta's digital landscape.

Qualifications

Requirement:
 

  • University graduation in a related field such as Visual Communication and Digital Design, Computer Science, Graphic Design, Information Technology or Web Design and Development plus three years related experience. 


Equivalency (to be considered as below):
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 

 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or  
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 


Assets: 
 

  • Front-end design experience, including creating responsive and interactive web interfaces. 
  • Strong digital design skills, with experience in crafting user-friendly layouts and visual elements. 
  • Good working knowledge of HTML, ensuring proper structuring of web content. 
  • Expert knowledge of responsive behavior for web components, optimizing for multiple devices and screen sizes. 
  • Experience with Accessible Design Practices, ensuring websites meet accessibility standards. 
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Familiarity with web development frameworks and tools, enhancing the design-to-development workflow.
