As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for fostering Alberta’s environmentally responsible forest management practices, including management of wildfires.  We preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

The Forestry Division, within the Ministry of Forestry and Parks, works to enhance the economic, environmental, and social contributions of our forests and forested lands to Albertans.

Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role that has a direct impact on small operators within the forest industry and uses all your education and experience?

Reporting to the Forest Systems Advisor, the Forest Tenure Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of timber permit systems, with a particular focus on operational policy development, the interpretation of legislation and policy, and stakeholder relations. The position is responsible for the overall delivery of Alberta's timber permit programs with guidance from the Forest Systems Advisor and the Director of Forest Tenure, Trade and Economics.

In this role, you will primarily be working in an office setting. You will have regular, on-going contact with the Forest Systems Advisor, department staff, the forest industry, and other government organizations in operational implementation of timber dispositions, data collection, interpretation and research & analysis.

Your responsibilities will include and are not limited to:
•    Implementating and maintaining of Alberta's multiple timber permit programs for local sale and use.
•    Implementating and maintaining of Alberta's timber permit programs for commercial volume supply to the provincial log market.
•    Developing and evaluating operational policy. Contributing to strategic policy and tenure reference documents to enable effective forest tenure systems.

Qualifications

Requirements:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Resource Economics, or a related field.


Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in forest planning, forest harvest operations, tenure rights, or silviculture.

Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Other Requirements:
•    Membership or eligibility for membership as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or Registered Professional Forest Technician (RPFT).
•    A Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).    


Assets

•    Knowledge of Alberta’s legislative and regulatory frameworks, including the Forests Act and its regulations, and the Public Lands Act and its regulations.
•    Proficiency in relationship development and technical writing.
•    Proficiency in stakeholder relations, facilitation, and negotiation.
•    Experience in policy development.

Notes

This is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday.

In-person meetings in Edmonton are a requirement of this position, however, remote working arrangements may be considered within other forest area office locations within Alberta as approved. Find forest area offices here.

Limited travel throughout the province will be required as part of your responsibilities to coordinate with Ministry staff and colleagues, other government departments, regulated parties, and other external stakeholders.
