Role Responsibilities
Public Safety and Emergency Services (PSES) is seeking a strategic and innovative Fleet and Safety Manager to oversee and modernize the management of a highly specialized and complex fleet. With approximately 800 vehicles and an additional 800 pieces of equipment deployed across the province, this role is critical in driving operational efficiency, safety, and compliance.
As maintenance costs rise and inconsistencies in vehicle servicing and reporting persist, this position will lead the development and implementation of a unified, forward-thinking fleet management framework. The successful candidate will play a key role in adapting to emerging vehicle technologies and evolving regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive fleet management strategy.
- Standardize and consolidate fleet practices, procedures, and reporting across all PSES Divisions and Branches.
- Ensure compliance with all legislated vehicle regulatory requirements, including the Alberta Traffic Safety Act.
- Identify and implement automation opportunities to streamline fleet operations.
- Apply for and manage exemptions under the Traffic Safety Act where applicable.
- Promote and maintain high standards of driver and road safety.
- Develop and champion change management strategies to support departmental adoption.
- Monitor and evaluate fleet performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
- Function as the PSES Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) operational champion
- Serve as the primary contact for PSES staff and RMI.
- Oversee the annual RMI renewal campaign.

Qualifications
Required:
- A university degree (4 years) in Business with a minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience.
Equivalency:
- Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Required:
- Knowledge of insurance regulations and operating leases is a requirement.
- Must understand the transportation and regulations concerning Dangerous Goods (TDG)
- Comprehensively understand the National Safety Code, Alberta Traffic Safety Act and its regulations, and Federal legislation, and where they apply to PSES fleet operations and activities.
- Class 5 (non probationary) or higher drivers license with a drivers abstract not older than 30 days. Abstract will only be required for candidates being invited for an interview.
Assets:
- Advanced Project Management and planning experience with relevant designation
- Knowledge of contract law, trade agreements, and tendering process (e.g., Request for quotes, proposals, etc.)
