Tourism and Sport - one of the Government of Alberta’s newest and most exciting ministries!  We lead the development, sustainability and growth of Alberta’s visitor economy. We also lead Alberta’s amateur sport system. Tourism and Sport supports Provincial Sport Organizations, provides grants to improve sport and recreation infrastructure and brings major sport events to Alberta. The Ministry focuses on supporting athletes from the grassroots to Olympians.

The Sport, Tourism and Recreation (STAR) Division leads programming for the department. The Division is comprised of the Assistant Deputy Minister's office; the Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (SPAR) Branch; and the Tourism Policy and Strategy Branch. The STAR Division collaborates with many Government of Alberta Ministries and with a broad range of tourism, sport, physical activity and recreation stakeholders. In modeling the Alberta Public Service Values, the Financial and Administrative Coordinator has an essential role in collaborating with the SPAR branch and division team, as well as other ministries and stakeholders to obtain organizational goals.

Role Responsibilities

In this leadership role, you will oversee the effective and efficient operation of the Financial and Administration Unit, ensuring strong financial stewardship, smooth administrative functions, and reliable corporate services across the SPAR Branch. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, you will guide key operational activities, support strategic planning, and lead a small team to deliver high quality service to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Overseeing financial operations, including budgeting, expenditure monitoring, and grant payments
  • Leading administrative functions such as records management, contracts, risk management, and policy development
  • Managing corporate services, including IT coordination, mobile devices, and accommodation needs
  • Supporting planning, development, and manpower/resource planning activities across the Branch
  • Providing oversight of endowment funds and grant administration
  • Supervising two administrative support positions and fostering a collaborative, high performing team environment.

Qualifications

Required:  One-year certificate in a related field plus two years related experience; or equivalent as describedor equivalent as described

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

For Example: 
Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 1 years of experience

The successful candidate MUST also have:

  • Strong experience in financial administration, budgeting, and expenditure monitoring
  • Proven ability to manage administrative operations, including records, contracts, and policy processes
  • Experience supervising staff and supporting team performance
  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast paced, multi program environment
  • Strong communication, problem solving, and stakeholder management skills.

Assets:

  • Experience working in government, public sector, or a complex organizational environment
  • Knowledge of grant administration, endowment funds, or funding programs
  • Familiarity with IT coordination, mobile device management, or corporate services
  • Experience with risk management and planning processes.
